How To Easily Keep Pests Out Of Your Garden

Written by: Brandi Monasco

For most of my life, my family had a garden. Since we lived down a dirt road, literally in the middle of the woods, we constantly had deer and rabbits getting into the garden and munching on the crops. But those weren’t the only pests we had. The crops also were attacked by smaller pests such as caterpillars, aphids and snails, among others.

Did you know that these smaller pests can cause the most damage to your garden?

Sometimes pests are inevitable, but the good news is that you don’t need harmful chemicals to spray on the food that you and your family will eat just to get rid of pests. Chemical pesticides leave residues that can cause contaminations in different ways and should be avoided.

Luckily, there are some natural alternatives for keeping these annoying pests out of your garden.

Natural Ways To Keep Pests/Bugs Away

Hot Pepper Spray

If you have hot peppers in your garden such as cayenne or jalapenos, you already have one natural remedy for pests. All you need to do is chop up a handful of peppers, boil them, strain them into a spray bottle and then spray the affected plants.

For best results, it is recommended that you use one bulb of garlic and onion and then add cayenne pepper. Make sure that while you’re handling hot peppers that you wear gloves.

Coffee Spray

Coffee spray is also an effective method for getting rid of pests. It is very effective on pests such as aphids and caterpillars.

To make coffee spray, you need any of the following herbs: tansy, thyme, rue, lavender, pennyroyal, catnip and Artemisia. Mix a cupful of any of these herbs with coffee grounds. Add at least 2 cups of water into this mixture. Let the mixture sit for about 24 hours and then spray your crops.

This spice tastes good in food, but for pests, it is a poison. Ground a handful of turmeric and sprinkle the powder around the base and on the leaves of your plants. You can also make a spray by adding turmeric to water and then spray your plants.

Companion Planting

Plants such as lavender, chrysanthemums and basil can repel pests. These plants contain a natural pesticide. They help keep away moths, fleas, aphids, bugs and more. You can plant these together with your crops to keep all these pests away.

Banana And Orange Peels

Placing banana peels and orange peels around your crops is also an effective way to keep aphids and ants off of your crops.
