This week’s Saturday Strategy is a little different, my friend…

While I am going to give you some tangible tools to implement along with a delicious, superfood-packed smoothie to enjoy at the end… this week we are going to focus a little more so on the importance of mindset and how it can play a crucial role in your existence on this planet.

New PictureThis week, I decided to take a train ride to visit my good friend, Lewis Howes, in Beverly Hills to gain some insight into his upcoming book – The School of Greatness – and share with YOU some pretty powerful take-aways that resonate throughout his incredible book (which I just so happened to read on my way to his place) – as well as in the lives of so many of you reading this right now.

You see, not everything in life works out the way we plan… and more often than not, the outcome proves to be a complete blessing… we just need to be reminded to see it as such.

Lewis Howes was a professional athlete before an injury took him out of the game he loved. The plan for his life now looked very different… he had to recreate all that he’d worked so hard to achieve. Now, it was time for him to reinvent his purpose and rediscover his passion. This was his chance to turn an unfortunate circumstance into the best possible situation.

He wasn’t going to allow this setback to stop him from pursuing the life he knew was possible. But that doesn’t mean it was easy.

After leaving professional football, Lewis found himself 30 pounds overweight, living in New York City, eating a lot of sugar and indulging in late night meals of pizza and other less favorable foods (if you can call them that). He even ate candy bars for dinner!

This wasn’t how he wanted to live his life though and after seeing the documentary, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, he took all he’d learned from his coaches and mentors over the years and decided to implement these tools to create something bigger than himself. He committed to getting healthy and building an empire.

Lewis is a like a brother from another mother. He is a stand-up, all-around great guy and also happens to be a really successful entrepreneur. His new book (on shelves October 27, 2015) is focused on taking your health and mind to the next level… something you all know that we preach daily at Fitlife.

I had a lot of questions for Lewis and we talked for quite some time before filming. But something that really stuck out for me was his ability to stay grounded, despite being surrounded by celebrities and high profile influencers every single day. How did he keep going, even though his “plan” had taken a different turn? And how did he do it so seamlessly?

Well, he was happy to share his top 3 secrets to creating the life of his dreams… and I want to share those things with you today.

Lewis’ Top 3 Secrets To Living A Life Of Greatness


1. Grounding + Visualization + Action = Results.

Grounding, not in the sense that you may be familiar with (barefoot in nature – “earthing”), but in the sense of visualizing and setting the intention for your life every day… as often as possible.

Throughout his athletic career, he constantly watched film on the perfect plays. He would wake up visualizing that he WAS the star player. He would go to bed with the same vision.

He was constantly visualizing what he wanted to create in his life. He set the intention for what his life would look like and low and behold, those visions became reality.

The key? Seeing yourself being in that experience, living that life in that body…

How many times have you wanted something, but you weren’t sure HOW to get it? Maybe this left you paralyzed and instead of pushing forward, you opted to do nothing at all. Don’t worry, my friend. You’re not alone.

Change can be scary… it can be hard. It’s usually is both of those things! But through visualization and action, you may be surprised what shows up for you. YOU are the creator of your reality and only YOU can decide how your life will look. Of course, this takes a lot of faith not only in the Universe / God / The Divine (whatever you choose to believe in) – but a great deal of faith in your own abilities. And you are incredibly powerful.

Here is an exercise that’s helped me tremendously and I know it can help you too!

2. Create Your Circle.

You’ve all heard the saying, “you become the 5 people that you spend the most time with.” And THAT has been a huge player in Lewis’ life. I can attest that this very simple truth has had profound results in my own life, personally, as well.

Lewis continuously surrounds himself with people on the same mission as himself, those that are just as heart-centered and driven to live an amazing life. And in the process, he has created exactly what he set out to create – an empire, inspiring others to:

Begin to “Live the Dream” on Your Terms

It’s easy to get caught up in what’s comfortable and maybe, just maybe, those circles you’ve been hanging around in served you well for a while. But maybe you realize that they don’t anymore – and that’s okay. At any point in your life, you have the choice to detour, turnaround, whatever you need to do to get to the place where you feel most ALIVE. And sometimes that doesn’t include the people you’ve called “friends” for any period of time.

Starting over is part of life… just like Lewis did with his career, so can you with anything in your life no longer serving your highest potential. Just remember, you want to make sure that YOU are also providing a positive impact in the lives of those you come into contact with.

3. Fuel Your Body.

Gone are the days of candy bars and pizza on a regular basis. Lewis now starts nearly every morning with a superfood-loaded, incredibly delicious green smoothie and I’m going to share that recipe with you here!

But first, let me tell you WHY these ingredients are so amazing and why YOU should be including them in YOUR diet…

1. Protein

We need protein for many reasons: to build muscle, tissue, bones and cartilage; for enzymes and hormones; to create immune system antibodies; and to maintain fluid and pH balance in our blood. Because protein is so closely linked to growth, we need more of it when we are younger, if we are pregnant, or if we are increasing muscle (post illness/trauma, or for bodybuilding). Otherwise most adults need between 50-100 grams of protein each day*.

The body digests protein more slowly than carbs, or even fat and therefore, it helps us feel fuller longer. It is the last of the micronutrients to be stored as fat and that is why protein has become the darling of the diet world.

2. Cacao

Raw cacao beans contain possibly the world’s most concentrated source of antioxidants found in any food. They are also extremely high in magnesium, which has been found to be the most common deficient major mineral, even following a balanced diet (it’s estimated that somewhere around 80% of the population are somewhat deficient in magnesium!).

For those concerned with not getting enough iron, it is good to know that each serving of raw cacao beans contains 21% of the recommended daily allowance of iron. And if that is not enough, raw cacao beans have 14 times more flavonoids (antioxidants) than red wine and 21 times more than green tea.

Cacao has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve circulation and have positive impact on cardiovascular health (such as lowered risk of heart disease). It can lower LDL cholesterol and reduce plaque buildup on artery walls. It neutralizes free radicals from environmental pollutants that can cause cardiovascular disease and possibly cancer.

Outside of heart health, cacao aids digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes. It can also boost physical and mental well-being and lower the risk of certain types of cancer.

3. Maca

Maca is one of my favorite adaptogens. It has been used for many years to balance the endocrine system, including the thyroid, adrenal glands and hormones. It’s shown positive results for brain health as well as its ability to help reduce stress.

4. Organifi

Loaded with vitamins A, K and C – and numerous others – kale packs a surprising amount of protein as well making it a favorite to many vegetarian and vegan-friendly meals.

When it comes to creating the life of your dreams, these 3 tips are great places to start! Of course, we can’t control everything that happens, but we can control how we react. I encourage you to seek the higher path, my friend. Stay grounded. Surround yourself with other amazing people. And fuel your body with whole, real foods.

I want you to live the best life possible… and I know you want that for yourself too. It’s possible. Don’t ever give up!
