How To “Break The Rules” and Live Life YOUR WAY

I quit my job without having another one lined up.

I don’t wear deodorant every day (because I don’t get body odor that often… really… I swear).

I asked a man out on a first date.

I’m 32 and care more about what country I will visit next then when I will get married.

And I pretty much am always “marching to the beat of my own drum.” I respect “the rules…” but that doesn’t go without saying that I like making my own – who makes these life “rules” anyway?

YOU DO – that’s who.

Your life. YOUR rules.

If you want to live a joyful life and feel fulfilled, then it’s time to start living life the way YOU want to! What I mean is that you need to be 100% authentic in WHO you are, WHAT you want and HOW you will show up to this thing called life each and every day.

First, let’s define AUTHENTIC: “Of undisputed origin – genuine… truly what something is said to be.” To put it simply… BE YOU!

Unfortunately, the nature of our modern society is very judgemental and many people love to criticize other people’s life choices. But you know what? The people that criticize others are the people that are most likely not happy with their OWN lives!

What works for you could be disastrous for another. What makes you happy could drive another person cRaZy! It’s all about designing your life in a way that suits you, makes you excited to live each day and leaves you feeling satisfied when you place your head on your pillow at night.

Here are 3 steps to creating a one-of-a-kind, personalized life experience that YOU love:

1. THINK – Step away from it all and really think about what YOU want your life to be like. You don’t need to know HOW to make it happen… you simply need to define what type of life you desire. It’s THAT simple – honestly.

Take it a step further and visually create your life by either writing it down in a journal (your personal mission statement) or cutting and pasting pictures to make a vision board. It may seem like a super easy task… but when you have to make it concrete (by recording it), you may realize that it’s not as easy as you expected (and that’s OKAY – you can always change what you want at any time)!

2. Make This Your Mantra: Progress, Not Perfection – I suck at this one. BUT – I finally “let go” and embraced that everything can’t be exactly how I want it to be. I set extremely ambitious goals for myself and expect them to happen… TOMORROW.

Once I adopted a “step-by-step” approach to achieving my goals, I felt so much better! Even if it’s the tiniest step towards your goal – it’s a STEP – and it’s better than doing nothing at all.

3. The Choice Is YOURS – “But, but, but”  – To live your ideal life, you must stop making excuses for yourself and others. NO more rationalizing your decisions and life choices to other people that just don’t get you. When you live an authentic life, you are a person of decisiveness and action! KNOW what you want and express it.

Not sure where to start? A great exercise to do is to brainstorm what you want for yourself in each of these area of your life:

Have your list? GREAT!

Now take ONE item from each area and implement it into your life… TODAY.

Once that item becomes a habit, revisit your list and incorporate another.

Before you know it, you will be living an amazing life that YOU designed – and the fulfillment and joy you feel each and everyday will be a constant reminder that YOU (and only you) define the terms, conditions and rules for your life.
