How Metabolism Works To Lose Weight (are you making these mistakes?) – Saturday Strategy

Today, my friend and fellow health and wellness extraordinaire, Abbey Gibb – holistic nutritionist and founder of the lifestyle network, AbbeyGibb.tv – has some information to teach us about how to lose weight naturally! Give her a big warm welcome!

Metabolism Mistakes

Today we are going to talk about all the ways you could be potentially messing up your metabolism! This isn’t always fun because these little habits are often hard to break, but once you know about them, that’s the first step! If you can change the following metabolism mistakes, you can potentially burn more fat throughout the day.

#1. Sabotaging Your Breakfast

A lot of you may be trying to eat a good breakfast in the morning because everyone tells you breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? Well what’s just as important as EATING breakfast is WHAT you eat for breakfast. This is where you may be slipping up.

If your breakfast contains a significant amount of CARBS and SUGAR, then you are likely sabotaging your metabolism! When you wake up in the morning and feel a little jittery or cranky, that usually means your insulin levels are already pretty high. When you top that off with a carb-heavy breakfast, you spike that insulin even more and soon experience a crash. This can make you hungry again before you even get close to lunchtime.

Solution: Add some protein. You can use something like Organifi Complete Protein in your oatmeal or a shake or have some eggs on the side. This will help to fill you up and slow the digestion of carbs so you don’t experience a dramatic insulin spike, but instead remain steady and full throughout the morning.

#2. Muscle Turnover

I know a lot of you following this blog are trying to workout on a regular basis. Maybe you’re lifting weights, doing yoga, running, doing outdoor exercise, etc. Something that may be keeping you from reaching your goals is muscle turnover. This happens when you are not getting enough protein in your diet so your metabolism is literally eating away at any muscle gains throughout the day.

Solution: Most women I know are not getting enough protein. How much do you need? Between 60-90 grams every single day. That means every meal you should be getting a fist size of a good protein source. That could be an egg, ½ a slice of salmon, some chicken breast, plant-based proteins like quinoa or hemp, or a protein shake like Organifi Complete Protein.

Protein helps support muscle strength and growth. When you have more muscle, your metabolism burns more calories every day. Building muscle doesn’t mean you are going to be big and gnarly. Muscle, by pound, is actually significantly smaller than fat! So when you replace fat with muscle, you look much leaner, younger and stronger!

#3. Not Eating

We are all guilty of this at some point. We get so frustrated that we are not hitting our weight goals that we just sort of give up eating for a few days. Salads for every meal? Nothing but water? This will help me lose weight for sure, right? Not so fast.

When you deprive your body of food, your metabolism actually SLOWS DOWN.

Solution: Eat! Don’t deprive yourself of much needed nutrients from food. Eat like a normal person and don’t go on a crazy super-low calorie diet as a desperate attempt to lose pounds. It will backfire.

Instead, follow these simple tips to boost metabolism and increase weight loss potential:

  • Fill your plate with leafy greens
  • Eat asparagus and more vegetables
  • Drink green juice
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get enough protein
  • Avoid sugar and processed foods

Also, practice some self-love and acceptance. The truth is, there are many different body types and not all of our bodies are able to look like runway models! And that is OKAY. Stop fighting who you are meant to be. Learn to love it! You are beautiful and complete just how you are. Your main goal should be to live healthy and vibrant in the body you were given.

#4. Not Washing Produce

Your endocrine system plays a role in how fast or slow your metabolism runs. Everything in your body is connected. When your endocrine system is suffering, it probably means your metabolism is too. So pay attention to the things that could potentially hurt your endocrine system like the chemical or plastic residues on unwashed produce.

Solution: Thoroughly wash all your produce before consumption. Even things with a peel like melons and avocados. When you cut these open, if you haven’t washed the outside, you will risk bringing all of the chemical residue on the outside and push it to the inside.

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
