How I Lost 27 Pounds Eating Only At Restaurants

Written By: Tricia Davis – Payne

I was a bit overweight after I had my daughter. By a bit I mean like 65 lbs. It seemed to stick like glue to my body, regardless of eating mainly healthy food and staying active. My main activity was figuring out how to be a mom and doing my best to add in some afternoon walks in between everything else each day. Because I had left work to stay at home with my newborn for almost 2 years,  funds were tight and eating out became a luxury.

When I made the decision to go back into the workforce, I landed a job with a company based out of Germany and was to spend 25 days in there for training. My food and expenses were all covered and I lived out of a hotel for almost a month. I ate out every day, 3 meals a day. Some of those meals were in nice restaurants, while others were quick and easy spots on the go. Lots of pizza, snitchzel, breads, sweets, cheeses. I even ate at McDonalds once, just to compare it to the U.S. version. I walked everyday, slightly more than I did at home, mostly because I was busy taking in the sights after work each day in a new place.

After 3 days of eating out, I thought to myself, ‘this food is amazing and I may just gain another 30 lbs. doing this, but… when in Rome’. I went on a four-day stretch where pizza was 1 meal of everyday, a whole, usually large pizza. You know, because… leftovers.

By the time I left to head back home, none of my clothes fit.

They were falling off my body.

I lost 27 pounds in 3 weeks and a couple of days, eating out!

As soon as I got home I was elated, but confused. I went back to my “healthy” eating habits.

I gained 5 pounds.

I wasn’t eating out anymore everyday, just the occasional meal here or there. We cooked at home; mostly we cooked fresh whole foods, lean and red meats, dairy, eggs, vegetables, fruits. I didn’t eat pizza. I was excited and motivated by my recent weight loss in Germany, so I chose to eat healthier.

I gained 10 lbs.

Why did this happen?

Here are the main differences between the ‘decadent’ food I ate in Germany and the ‘healthy’ food I ate at home.

In Germany, the source of the ingredients for things like meat, dairy, vegetables and fruits were all from local farms. The land and animals were cared for without chemicals, without genetic modification. I wasn’t eating GMO’s in Germany; I didn’t even know what GMO’s were at the time.

pounds, food, bodyChemicals and GMO’s that are banned or labeled in other countries like Germany are in and on almost everything we eat here in the US.

Learning this made me angry! Why does the rest of the world get decadent breads and sweets, deep fried meat, beautiful fruits and vegetables, pizza for days that doesn’t make you sick and fat and we don’t! And what the heck is a GMO, anyway?

Once I made the connection, I educated myself by reading and understanding ingredient labels and I stopped gaining weight. I went local and organic and slowly replaced all the food I consumed, all the body care products I used and all the cleaning products in my home with healthier upgrades, free of all the crap I now knew to be present.

It is my experience that by eliminating the chemicals I put in and on my body, the better I looked and felt. I still had to work to lose weight, but I stopped gaining it. This was a victory!

My daughter’s “terrible two’s syndrome” disappeared and my husband stopped taking heartburn medicine completely, something he had relied on for years on a nearly weekly basis.

No longer consuming chemicals was the ONLY change in our day-to-day lives. We stopped getting sick all the time and my weight stabilized.

How many people do you know who are chronically ill, obese, dying or already dead? Who take one or more medicines a day to maintain a chronic condition? For me, the numbers are alarming. Sleep apnea machines, compression socks, anxiety medicines, heart and high blood pressure medicine, allergy medicine, asthma medicine, diabetes, cancer – these are all serious, chronic problems amongst many of my friends and family. The list goes on and on. And it’s not only affecting people over 50!

The reason we study rats is because they have a measurable life span of 2 years, comparative to 50 human years. What a scientist sees in the 2-year life of a rat and their generational offspring is relevant to what we will experience with equivalent exposure over 50 plus years.

Our food supply contains well over 40,000 chemicals and we are adding more all the time. Many of which we have no idea if they are even safe to consume. The ones we know are not safe are in household, body care and food products, mostly unregulated, but scientifically proven to cause harm to the body. Products we casually consume everyday.

While I am not an expert on the body or toxic chemical exposure, I can tell you that continuing to reduce my exposure from my home and my body has impacted me and my family in such dramatic ways that it cannot be denied.

7 Tips To Transform Your Kitchen and Home For A Healthier You

1. Get Educated. An easy way to get a great deal of information on what’s going on with our food supply is to watch some documentaries that put the situation into perspective (Forks Over Knives, OMG GMO and Unacceptable Levels are a great start).

2. Go Organic. Just by switching from conventional to organic, you are avoiding GMO’s and a host of toxic chemicals found on conventional produce.

3. Go Slow. I slowly replaced all my expensive cooking items, I didn’t just throw everything away at once. As you finish up with a spice or oil, replace it with a healthier, organic version.

4. 5 or Less Rule. Processed food is not the healthiest choice, even when you look at organic alternatives. I have a five or less rule in my house. If it is processed in any way, it must be 5 ingredients or less and I must know what the ingredients are before I feed them to my family.

5. Google It. Take 1 item from your grocery bag every time you come home from the store and google an ingredient on the package you don’t know about. This regular practice has made me somewhat of an ingredient know-it-all. You will find yourself seeing the same ingredients on varying products and you will be more confident in the choices you’re making.

6. Do It Yourself. From home cleaning products to sauces and condiments, you can make safe, effective alternatives at home and it’s easy, check out my blog on DIY Home Cleaning Alternatives. Save your health, save money and have fun.

7. Juice it, Blend it. I get so much more nutrition in my body everyday by juicing and making delicious smoothies. My blender and juicer get used more than any other appliance in my kitchen now. It’s an easy and affordable way to get lots of whole, raw plant based foods in your body without a lot of hassle. If you are a parent like me, this is a fantastic way to get veggies in your child, and they love to help. Find some great recipes here.
