How Coffee Is Actually Healthy

Do you rely on your morning coffee to get your day moving? It’s okay if you do; in fact, it’s great if you do.

Many people rely on their morning coffee to help wake them up. It gives you that energy boost you need to get moving and there’s really nothing better than a warm cup of coffee to kick off your day.

Over the past few years, there has been different takes on whether drinking coffee is good for you or not. And while drinking coffee with creamer and sugar may not exactly be healthy for you, drinking coffee in general does provide your body a few great benefits.

Coffee can improve your energy levels, which is one of the main reasons why so many people drink it in the mornings; it helps them to get going. Coffee contains a stimulant called caffeine. When you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream and travels to your brain. In your brain, the caffeine blocks a type of inhibitory neurotransmitter. The blocking of this neurotransmitter actually increases the release of other hormones that can enhance your memory, your mood, cognitive function and your energy level.

Coffee contains nutrients that are essential to your body. Just a single cup of coffee contains vitamin B5, vitamin B2, manganese, potassium, magnesium and niacin, all of which are very important for your body. In fact, according to one study performed in 2005, it found that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants!

And because coffee contains magnesium and potassium, it may help you to lose weight. Both magnesium and potassium helps your body to use insulin, which helps to regulate your blood sugar levels, reducing your craving for those sugary snacks.

Coffee can also help you burn off fat! Studies have found that the caffeine in coffee can actually increase your metabolic rate by 3-11%. The caffeine works by stimulating your nervous system and sends signals to your fat cells and tells them to break down the fat. Caffeine also increases the hormone epinephrine, or adrenaline, which travels through your bloodstream to the fat tissues and sends out signals to break down fat and to release it from your bloodstream.

Drinking coffee lowers your chances of heart disease and heart failure. One study found that drinking coffee in moderation, about two 8-ounce cups per day, can protect your heart against heart failure.

While it seems that coffee is in fact healthy for you and provides your body numerous benefits, you must always remember that moderation is key. You should also remember that in order to get the maximum benefits of coffee, it is best to refrain from adding sugar and fatty creamers to your coffee.  

A new popular favorite creamer alternative among many people is adding coconut oil to your coffee. This not only sweetens and gives your coffee a creamy taste, but you reap the benefits of coconut oil as well!
