Honey Ginger Lemonade Drink For Treating Colds And To Soothe A Sore Throat

I’ve been getting a lot of calls, texts and emails from friends recently who are sick with a cold and experiencing exhausting symptoms. They want to know what will help them sleep at night, stop their coughing, help them recover more quickly and keep them from getting sick the rest of the winter.

First of all, I always tell them to turn to whole, real foods and eliminate added sugars and processed foods as much as possible.

Next, I usually give them a list of superfoods that contain potent healing properties, gut-balancing and immune-boosting nutrients and also taste amazing.

This Honey Ginger Lemonade is brimming with micronutrients, antibacterial properties, vitamins and minerals that will help soothe your system and (along with a healthy diet, some rest and sunlight) should help you get back to feeling better in no time.

Honey Ginger Lemonade Recipe
This makes a batch large enough for several servings. Store in the refrigerator and sip throughout the day for the duration of your illness or longer. This drink can help boost anyone’s immune system and can be used when you’re healthy as well!
  • 10 sprigs fresh mint
  • 5 cups ice cubes
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 ½ cups fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • ½ cup raw honey
  • ¼-½ cup peeled fresh ginger slices
  1. Combine all ingredients except ice and stir until well combined. Use your stirring utensil to press the ginger and mint to release flavor. Add ice and stir. Store in refrigerator.

Mint – with its strong odor – helps to clear the airways and respiratory system. It also has expectorant properties, which may help reduce phlegm and mucus associated with your cold. Mint contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that boost the immune system and help to clear your body of any cold-causing bugs.  


Disease cannot thrive in an alkaline environment. If you’re sick, your body is more acidic than alkaline. Lemon, although an acidic fruit, has an alkalizing effect on your entire body. Ginger has long been studied for its pain-relieving properties and has been said to rival many anti-inflammatory and pain-relief drugs. Ginger helps to soothe an upset stomach, clear out toxins and boost the immune system.


Only use honey in children who are over 1 years old. The honey in this recipe will help to coat a sore throat and relieve pain and coughing. Studies have shown that honey can relieve nighttime coughing and improve sleep. Honey is one of the most powerful and long-used medicinal foods on the planet and contains anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and antibacterial properties as well as hundreds of powerful enzymes.
