Holding Onto These 4 Things Can Ruin Your Health

As busy as you are, good health is still on your list of priorities (it’s got to be if you’re here, right?).

Let’s sniff out the top 10 things that you need to throw away NOW so that you can have better health. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with fabulous replacements and simple shifts that can help you cruise on as though nothing has changed!

1. Artificial Air Fresheners

This is a biggie. Did you know that chemicals in air fresheners are being found very commonly in the blood of Americans? The stuff that makes things smell good has been linked to lung damage, asthma and generalized toxicity.

Bottom line, it’s just not good for you. But trashing the chemical sprays doesn’t mean you need to live in a stinky world!

For safe, fresh smelling air there are several great natural options. Zeolite is a good solution for odors caused by moisture. The product comes in mesh bags or containers with air holes and works by absorbing odors and neutralizing them. With Zeolite, the smell of fresh is no smell at all.

Essential Oils are another great option. Natural air fresheners that are made with water and essential oils are not only safer, but are also popular because they are easy to DIY and have the added benefit of aromatherapy.  

To try it yourself, fill a 4 oz glass or aluminum spray bottle with distilled water. Add 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Shake and spray! You can also get fancy and use a diffuser to spread gentle aromatherapy throughout a room. Fresh scents include orange, lemon, peppermint, lavender and fir/pine.  

2. Deodorant/Antiperspirant

I know! This one can be uncomfortable to entertain because no one wants to stink. But, it’s time to give your armpits a break from the aluminium in most antiperspirants. Aluminum is just a bad idea; it’s linked to Alzheimer’s and generalized toxicity among many other things.

The good news is that you can drop the unsafe stuff and chose from some fabulous alternatives. Take a look at The Environmental Working Group database and choose from safe personal care products. OR, simplify your routine by going DIY with some coconut oil and essential oils. Easier still, rub some fresh lime on your pits and you can call it a day!  

3. Plastics

Researchers have known for years that chemicals in plastics commonly leach into products. There are studies that show that endocrine-disrupting chemicals transfer from plastics into microwaved foods and that BPA and phthalates are in bottled water.   

Best bet is to avoid plastic containers. Opt for glass or ceramics and give yourself a high five!

4. A Negative Attitude

Chin up! Studies show that people who have positive attitudes tend to be healthier than people who have negative attitudes.  

According to the Mayo Clinic, health benefits from positive thinking can include an increased life span, lower rates of depression, lower levels of distress, greater resistance to the common cold, better psychological and physical well-being, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and better coping skills during hardships and times of stress.

What’s wild is that you don’t even have to be Little Miss Mary Sunshine… mildly positive and even neutral attitudes can keep you healthier than if you get stuck in the mud.  

The bottom line: even if you aren’t an eternal optimist, keep your chin up!  Staying out of the dregs of negativity can help long term. Make negativity a no-no and see what happens!
