5 Of The Best Healthy Halloween Party Appetizers
By Jess Baumgardner
If you’ve been trying to make healthier choices lately and are worried about the Halloween party circuit messing you up, I’m here to tell you that there are two surefire ways to eat (somewhat) healthy on Halloween.
1. Host your own get-together with a few easy appetizers
2. Offer to bring something to your friend’s soiree
Both of these options guarantee that you will have at least ONE healthy option to nibble on. If you’re unsure about how you are going to pull off making food AND getting costume-ready, don’t fear – these recipes are all QUICK and easy. Not many people have time to do a full face of monster makeup AND a 20-ingredient witches’ brew, after all.

Spooky Black Bean Hummus
Credit: Fatfree Vegan Kitchen
I always love serving dips at parties, because they are quick to throw together and can easily be refilled. Here’s another – a spooky take on hummus. You can even use the same dippers that you have for the guacamole.
Spooky Black Bean Hummus
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 15-ounce cans black beans, drained and rinsed
- 2 tbsp tahini
- 3 to 4 tbsp lime (or lemon) juice
- 1 tsp cumin
- ⅛ to ¼ tsp chipotle pepper — to taste
- 3 tbsp unsweetened yogurt (optional)
- ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
- For design: additional plain soy yogurt or tahini
- With the food processor running, drop in the garlic cloves and process until finely chopped. Add the black beans and process until pureed. Add the remaining ingredients (use the lesser amounts) and process until smooth. Taste and correct seasonings, adding more as needed.
- Spoon the hummus into a serving dish, smoothing the top. Using a pastry bag and either soy yogurt or thinned tahini, pipe on the design. Place a plastic spider into the web, or make one yourself from black olives. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Baked Paleo Chicken Tenders

Want to give your guests something with a bit more substance? I once made “healthified” chicken fingers and added fingernails to increase the creep factor. Everyone loved these! Just make the recipe below and add slivered almonds to the tenders before you bake them. Dip them in marinara sauce (AKA blood!).
Baked Paleo Chicken Tenders
- 1 pound organic boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
- 1 egg
- ½ cup almond meal
- ¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut (or ¼ cup more almond meal)
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp sea salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Preheat oven to 400°.
- Place almond meal, coconut, paprika, cayenne, garlic, sea salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir to combine.
- Crack egg into another shallow bowl and whisk.
- One by one, dredge each chicken tender in the egg bowl, wiping off any excess and then dip each into the almond meal mixture. Roll until each tender is covered completely. Place the coated tenders on a baking pan lined with parchment paper or a wire rack that fits on a baking sheet. The wire rack will make for a crispier texture. Bake for 20 minutes, flipping the tenders once at the 10-minute mark. When done, the chicken tenders will be golden brown and completely cooked through. Remove tenders from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

- Cut the hard-boiled eggs in half lengthwise, remove the yolks and place the yolks in a medium bowl.
- Smash the egg yolks and avocado with the back of a fork until fairly smooth.
- Add the lime juice, sriracha (to taste) and salt, and smash again until combined.
- Stir in the cilantro.
- Fill the egg white halves with the avocado mixture.

Last but not least, this one is SO easy to do and makes for a true creepy-crawly snack!
Olive Spiders
- 1 olive
- 9 rosemary leaves
- 1 caper
- Use a wooden skewer or toothpick to make 4 holes on 2 opposite sides of an olive.
- Insert a rosemary leaf in each hole. Use another rosemary leaf to secure a caper at one end of each olive.
- Use olives in different sizes and colors (pick out the rosemary leaves if you want to eat the olives).
