If “all disease begins in the gut,” as Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said thousands of years ago, then I believe it is safe to say that healing does as well. Your gastrointestinal system plays a big role in your overall health, as it is home to about 80% of your immune system.

One of my favorite ways of healing the gut is using bone broth. It is rich in collagen and a wide range of other nutrients; organic chicken or beef bone broth is a great tool to rebuild gut function from problems such as leaky gut syndrome, SIBO and candida overgrowth.

Typically, bone broth is used in soup recipes. I personally like to drink my bone broth as it is, but there are many creative ways to get nourishing broth into your day besides in broth form or in soups.

If you want my staple bone broth recipe to use here, check it out in my article “Still Resisting Bone Broth?” But if drinking your bone broth straight up or in a soup is not your vibe, here are 4 fresh ideas to get bone broth into your day!

#1. Turmeric Bone Broth Coconut Milk

Fight inflammation + heal your gut = yum!

  • 1 cup full-fat coconut milk
  • 1 cup bone broth
  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp raw honey
  • ¼ tsp ginger powder

1. Blend ingredients well in a blender.

2. Pour into saucepan and heat for 3 to 5 minutes over medium heat until warm.

What it’s doing for you: This warm elixir offers a wide array of inflammation fighters as well as the healthy fats of coconut. The black pepper is a super-booster for the turmeric, making it even stronger at calming inflammation in your body.

#2. Mashed Bone Broth Cauliflower

A nutrient-dense, healthier spin on mashed potatoes.

  • 5 cups cauliflower florets
  • ⅓ cup bone broth
  • 6 tbsp grass-fed ghee
  • Himalayan sea salt, black pepper and garlic powder, to taste

1. Steam cauliflower for about 10 minutes.

2. Put cauliflower into food processor; add warm bone broth and ghee.

3. Process until smooth.

What it’s doing for you: In addition to the gut-healing power of bone broth, the sulfur-rich cauliflower is a methylation booster, which is a big biochemical superhighway that helps the body detox and promotes a healthy gut lining.

#3. Bone Broth Salsa – Muy Caliente!

  • 1 dried chili de arbol pepper
  • ¼ peeled, minced onion
  • ½ jalapeño pepper
  • 1 garlic clove
  • ⅓ cup bone broth
  • ⅔ cup tomato sauce
  • 4 sprigs chopped fresh cilantro
  • Himalayan sea salt to taste

1. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil and add the arbol chili. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the chili soak for 10 minutes.

2. Remove the chili from the water and discard the water.

3. Combine chili with all other ingredients in a food processor until smooth.

4. Place mixture in saucepan and simmer for 20 minutes.

5. Serve fresh.

What it’s doing for you: Give your body the opportunity to detox with this nutrient-packed salsa. The cilantro and onions are both great cleansing foods and promote detoxification in your body.

#4. Sauteed Bone Broth Kale

When these two superfoods combine, you have the recipe of amazing health.

  • 2 small bunches of kale, cut into 1 inch chunks
  • 3 tbsp grass-fed ghee
  • ½ cup bone broth, broth, or water
  • Himalayan sea salt to taste

1. Put bone broth and ghee in pan.

2. Add kale.

3. Stir over medium-high heat for around 5 minutes.

4. Remove pan from heat and cover with lid for about 5 to 7 minutes.

What it’s doing for you: Kale is rich in B vitamins, which are needed for healthy methylation pathways, which promote a healthy gut and hormones. Ghee is also a great source of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K2.

I love a great cup of bone broth, especially now that it is getting cooler, but if that is not your thing, try out one or all of these recipes to get your gut-healing underway. Please share your experiences and favorite bone broth recipes in the comments below!

What Our Clients Say*

During my FitLife transformation, I lost 70 pounds! That's why I signed up for the protocol, but the most exciting result is that I found ME in the process. I had been hiding under a pile of pounds, self-doubt, and grief! FitLife changed my life and I knew I had to share it with others.

-Lynne, Longwood FL

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
