Are you ready to learn about one of the greatest exports in the health supplement arena?

Camu Camu.

Camu Camu isn’t your typical neighborhood fruit and you sure won’t find it in the grounds of your local farmhouse. I was curious to see what other fruits were on the market that I may not have heard of or experienced. In my research, I saw some images of something that looked like a lemon, but was light reddish-orange in color and learned its name: Camu Camu.

This fascinating fruit mostly grows in the flooded areas of the Amazon rainforest in Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela where they use it and its leaves for medicinal purposes.

The natural health community claim that this fruit has anti-viral properties that help with cold sores, herpes, shingles and the common cold. With all the health benefits this little fruit packs, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.

Here are some of the top benefits of camu camu and what you can reap if you include it in your diet:

1. Vitamin C

Camu camu has 60 times more per serving than an orange! A teaspoon of camu camu powder has 1180% of your recommended daily intake for vitamin C.

2. Valine

Valine is an essential amino acid, meaning that you must get it through food. Valine is used by the body to prevent muscle breakdown and is important for nervous system and cognitive function.

3. Potassium

You need potassium for the proper functioning of the heart and kidneys. 71.1 milligrams are found in every 100 grams of camu camu.

4. Leucine

Leucine is an essential amino acid that your body needs for muscle and bone tissue growth and recovery and the production of growth hormones.

5. Serine

Another amino acid! This one is key for digestion: serine helps to break down the bonds in proteins and polypeptides so that they can be used more effectively by your body.

6. Flavonoids

Camu camu has several different flavonoids, which are compounds that are found in plants and are part of what gives fruits and vegetables their awesome colors. They mostly function in the body as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful free radicals.

7. Gallic Acid

Gallic acid has antifungal and antiviral properties. It also acts as an antioxidant.

8. Ellagic Acid

This is another acid with antioxidant properties. It has been studied for anti-cancer effects, though research is still very early. Some research though has indicated that ellagic acid has anti-diabetes effects.

9. Inflammation

In one study, 20 male smokers drank camu camu juice or took vitamin C tablets daily for a week. The group who took camu camu showed a decrease in some markers for antioxidants and oxidative stress at the end of the study, compared to no change for those who had vitamin C tablets.
