Handy Ways To A Better Memory

Do you often walk into the kitchen and forget what you were going to do? What about having a mental list of groceries that you need to pick up, only to walk into the store and you forget? Do you easily forget someone’s name or where you parked your car at the mall?

That’s perfectly normal. With the stress and craziness of everyday life, it is normal to often forget a few things. If you suffer with the occasional forgetfulness, don’t fret; forgetfulness is curable!

  • Talk To Yourself. You have probably often heard that only the geniuses of the world talk to themselves. Well, that is because talking to yourself helps you to remember things! It gives you a visual image that you can easily remember. The next time you decide to go to the mall, look at the parking lot letter or number and say it outloud; “I have parked in Parking Lot C.” This is a great way to reinforce your memory.
  • Read More. Reading is actually beneficial for your brain. When you read, your brain processes each word and recalls the meaning of that word instantly.
  • Make A List. Whenever possible, try to make a list of things that you need to remember, such as what you need to pick up for dinner or when Susie gets out of soccer practice. By making lists, you are able to remember what you wrote down and this also frees your mind up for you to remember more important things, like taking dinner out of the oven on time!
  • Take Pictures. Can’t remember where you set down your keys or where you put your shoes? Did you know that over the course of a lifetime, Americans spend a full year just searching for things that we misplaced? If you have a hard time remembering things like this, simply take a mental picture whenever you set the item down.
  • Test Yourself. Make a list of grocery items or things to do and memorize it. An hour later, go back and see how many things you can recall from that list.
  • Look For “Markers.” Can’t remember where your friend lives even though you have been to her house a thousand times over the past year? The next time you are on the way to her house, pay attention to the land markers during the trip. For example, remember the bridge that you have to cross right before turning into her driveway, or that caution signal that you see when turning down her road.
