Habits You Need To Develop To Successfully Simplify Your Life

We’ve all been this kid at one point in time…
Whether it be the holiday gift-giving season, a birthday party, or a special celebration, chances are you’ve had to fake enthusiasm for receiving an undesired present (however, I’d be pretty freaking happy if someone gave me an avocado – how practical and delicious!).
As you receive these gifts and “things,” they often get tossed aside and long forgotten until the closet is bursting with junk – UGH!
Tackle the clutter and simplify your life by instilling these 3 steps (habits) over the next 3 days.
Day 1: Take Inventory
Are you using the MAJORITY of stuff that you own?
Chances are you are barely using half of it! It’s time to do a “clean sweep” of your living spaces and collect items that you haven’t touched/used in the past 3-6 months:
Makes 3 piles of “stuff”: keep (for now), donate, or sell
Box items to be donated and take them to a local shelter within 3 days
Box items for sale and arrange to either have a garage sale or take them to a consignment shop
TIP: Before you go to bed tonight, take a moment to visualize what you life will look like once you simplify and declutter. It’s up to YOU to build belief that you are able to make it happen.
You live in a highly consumeristic society. You are constantly bombarded with advertisements and images to BUY, BUY, BUY!
It is “normal” to frequently make purchases. You see a new shirt that you like and VOILA – your closet expands and you place that new shirt you “just had to have” next to the 20+ others you own. Been there, done that!
Once I started traveling and living out of a backpack, I was forced to function from a place of NEED… versus things I simply wanted. If I bought something, another item HAD to go.
Even if you aren’t living out of a small bag, it is still important to become aware of everything that you are buying and if it is truly something that you need. What else could you use that money for? Vacation fund? A new book to continue learning about something you love? A self pampering day at the spa?
TIP: Follow your bliss. Think about what brings you joy and makes you feel fulfilled that doesn’t require acquiring “things.” Got IT? Good… now go do MORE of that!
Day 3: Surround Yourself With Happiness
Everything you see, hear, touch, smell and taste influences your life.
Therefore, surround yourself with stuff that makes you feel GOOD. What I mean by this is your clothes, photos, etc. should produce positive thoughts and feelings when you encounter them.
For example, I was holding onto jewelry and photos from a previous relationship. My lasting memory of him is not a positive one. Therefore, when I saw these items, it produced negative feelings – which are obviously not healthy!
Also, saving clothes that will perhaps fit again “one day” is contributing absolutely nothing to your happiness TODAY. Get these items out of your life now so that you can focus on the things that bring you joy.
If it is not making you HAPPY, it is best that you set it free.
TIP: Develop patience. Things are not going to miraculously change overnight. It will be a journey… so accept each moment for what it IS instead of what you want it to be.
