That is precisely what this easy peasy homemade gut remedying sauerkraut recipe is all about!

What Is Sauerkraut?

It is a raw, fermented food that is made from cabbage and is packed with health-promoting probiotics. It is an incredible source of live probiotics and enzymes. The fermentation process of sauerkraut creates a pre-digested state that allows these nutrients to be more bioavailable to your body.

Why Eat Fermented Foods?

Fermentation preserves the nutrients in food and breaks down the food to a more digestible form.

Your body is full of TRILLIONS of beneficial bacteria that directly affect your health and well being.

These bacteria outnumber your human cells 10 to 1 and live in what is called your “microbiome.” Every time you eat something, it has an impact on the environment in your gut – and your gut bacteria LOVE fermented foods!

Because fermented foods contain an abundance of probiotics, these foods not only can improve your digestions by introducing beneficial bacteria into your system, but also have been shown to slow or reverse diseases and improve your overall health.

How To Make 3-Ingredient Gut Remedying Greatness Sauerkraut

Ingredients:

  • 1 head of cabbage, medium size
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 3 carrots, medium size
  • Large glass jars 

Instructions:

1. Chop the cabbage into thin strips and shred the carrot using a hand grater or food processor.

      • Spread the cabbage and carrots out in an even layer on your counter and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt. 

2. Using your hands, massage the mixture until they begin to release juices. Add more salt if desired.

3. Take the veggie mixture and scoop it into the jars. Really push down the mixture and pack it in tightly!

      • Continue until the veggies and liquid are to the rim.
      • Use a smaller jar (or something small and heavy) that fits inside the big jar to weigh down the mixture and keep it submerged in the juice. 

4. Place the jars on a tray and cover with a dark colored towel to keep out light.

After 3 days, check on the sauerkraut to see if it has fermented (use a fork to scoop out a bit and taste test it). If needed, allow it to further ferment for a few more days. You can place the lid on the large jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 months.

You can customize the flavor of your sauerkraut by adding your favorite ingredients to the mixture, such as:  

  • Garlic
  • Chilis
  • Peppers
  • Red cabbage
