Guide To Pickling Turmeric And Preserving The Benefits

I was not been a big fan of pickling, until I stumbled upon turmeric pickles; in a word… awesome! I love turmeric, ginger and cardamom for their tastiness and remedying powers. I love these spices so much so, in fact, that I wrote articles on each of them.

If you love delicious spices, are all about pickling and are really excited about turmeric pickles, read on!

Turmeric is from zingiberaceae or the ginger family. Zingiberaceae is a family of flowering plants that consists of aromatic perennial herbs with rhizomes. Rhizomes are knobby underground stems that have powerful and flavorful flesh.

In case you forgot or just don’t know, here is a quick recap on turmeric:

Turmeric

If you have never seen a fresh root of turmeric, it looks like a skinny yellower version of ginger. In Ayurveda, turmeric is known for healing the “whole person” and is good for all three doshas.

  • Helps digestion, maintains intestinal flora and reduces gas.
  • Works great as an antiseptic for small cuts, wounds and burns.
  • It helps reduce anxiety and stress.
  • It purifies the blood and improves formation of new blood tissue.
  • Is often used as a skin tonic.

Ginger & Turmeric Pickle Recipe
 
Ingredients
  • ¼ cup of fresh organic ginger, sliced
  • ¼ cup of fresh organic turmeric, sliced
  • 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tsp of Hingvastak
  • 1 tsp of black mustard seeds
  • ½ tsp of chili powder
  • 2 tsp of salt
  • Juice of 1 lemon
Instructions
  1. Slice ginger and turmeric without removing the skin (if using organic source).
  2. Heat some oil in the pan and add the spices. When the mustard seeds start to pop, turn the burner off. Add the spice mixture with the ginger and turmeric.
  3. In a glass jar put the ginger, turmeric, rest of the oil, salt and lemon juice.
  4. This can be stored for 2-3 months.

Here are few notes:

  • Keep moving the pickle around in the jar every other day, so that lemon juice does not settle down, leaving the top layer dry and without juice.
  • Your hands may stain yellow for 1-2 days because of the turmeric.

 

As I mentioned above, I am not versed in pickling, so this is an exciting new adventure for me, as I learn more I will be sharing more.
