Green Smoothie Recipe That Doesn’t Taste Like Swamp

Have you joined the green smoothie movement and tried adding handfuls of supposedly delicious and nutritious healthy greens to your morning smoothies, only to find that the majority of them have to be chugged down like a glass of swamp water?
It can be discouraging, to say the least. You hop on the train of good health, chug through some less-than-tasty green sludge every morning and then wake up a week later and say “no more” as you reach for the coffee and store-bought fruit juice cocktail.

Don’t worry, friend – I’ve got your back. And I’m here to hand you another ticket for the train to good health, but this time with a little advice and an awesome recipe.

- Liquid Base - 2 Cups
- Cold water
- Almond milk
- Leafy Greens - 2 Cups
- Dandelion Greens
- Bok choy
- Romaine lettuce
- Potential Add-Ins - 3 Cups (pick 2 or 3)
- Frozen banana
- ¼ avocado
- Frozen berries
- Frozen tropical fruit (mangos, pineapples, papaya, etc.)
- Raw cacao powder/nibs
- Nut butter
- 1-2 tbsp fresh turmeric
- 1-2 tbsp fresh ginger
- Fresh-squeezed lemon/lime juice
- Fresh mint leaves
- Vanilla plant protein powder
- Chia seeds
- Acai powder
- Coconut oil
- Process selected ingredients through a juicer and enjoy!
#1 Start with mild tasting greens like spinach. After a few days, mix in a little chard, red cabbage, or mixed greens. When you’re feeling brave, add in some kale, dandelion greens or other bitter greens. Your taste buds change very quickly and soon you will enjoy most types of greens just fine.
#2 When you’re first starting to make green smoothies, aim for a 50/50 ratio between fruit/other ingredients. As time continues, you can start adding more greens and superfoods and less fruit, eventually aiming for an 80/20 fruit/greens and other ingredients ratio.
#3 Put leafy greens at the bottom of the blender and the frozen fruit on top. This will help the greens get blended more smoothly. If that doesn’t do the trick, try blending only the greens in some water for 30 seconds before adding the rest of the ingredients.
#4 Include something creamy like banana or avocado (or both). If you don’t like bananas, then peaches or pears can also do the trick.
#5 Add natural sweeteners if you still aren’t enjoying the taste. Some great options include: raw honey, pure maple syrup, stevia, pitted dates, dried mulberries or goji berries.
