I have a big question I want you to think about today…

Is toothpaste safe for you and your family?

Maybe you’ve never thought about it before… you’ve been brushing your teeth since you were a little kid and buying the same toothpaste for years. It’s just one of those things everyone does. Why wouldn’t it be safe?

Let me tell you, most toothpaste brands have chemicals you wouldn’t want to scrub your floor tiles with… and you’re putting them in your mouth! Gross!

We all know fluoride in toothpaste can build up in our bones.  But, did you know that toothpaste also has detergents that burn the taste receptors on your tongue?  No joke. This loss of taste receptors has been found to make you crave more and more sugar, salt and processed food… which most likely lead to more cavities.

Isn’t that ironic?!

The Truth Behind Cavities

Are you one of those people who brushes their teeth religiously and even flosses on a regular basis… but STILL GETS CAVITIES?

I used to get cavities as a kid – but I was also a bit of a sugar monster.

Have you or your kids suffered from:

  • Tooth decay?
  • Crooked teeth?
  • Cavities before you were even 5 years old?

Dentists have been telling us for a long time that cavities and bad teeth are due to BAD GENES and/or SUGAR.

While this might be partially true, there is a lot more to the story!

Some studies have found that your DIET has a much largest impact on your oral health than even DAILY BRUSHING.

Think about this – your ENTIRE BODY is made to heal and regenerate itself – so why not your teeth?

Dr. Weston A. Price was a dentist and a researcher who traveled the world in search of cultures with healthy teeth. He found that cultures still living in a primitive lifestyle who all had similar genetics had entirely different oral health depending on their DIET.

Those who ate a more modernized diet were suffering from tooth decay and oral problems.

Those who ate a primitive diet completely avoided these issues all together.

There were a few similarities in the diet’s of those who had amazing oral health:

  • Enough minerals
  • Enough fat soluble vitamins like A, D and K.
  • Not too much sugar or phytic acid (phytic acid is found mostly in grains, nuts, seeds and legumes which are over consume in our society and lead to tooth decay)

So if you really want to avoid the dentist chair and have amazing oral health, there are a lot of simple lifestyle changes that will lead to just that!

Limit Sugar and Grain Intake

Sugar on your teeth attracts harmful bacteria into your mouth. These bacteria love sugar just as much as you do. The problem with this is, as the bacteria digests the sugar, the produce acids as a byproduct. These acids slowly eat away at the enamel on your teeth.

Your body has a natural defence against this process (of course!). The defense is SALIVA. Your saliva is rich in minerals that repair damage to tooth enamel. But when you’re eating sugar constantly your saliva doesn’t have time to repair damage quickly enough and permanent tooth damage can occur.

Fat Soluble Vitamins

Dr. Weston A. Price discovered that fat soluble vitamins are extremely important for healthy bones and teeth. Vitamins like vitamin A, D, E and especially K2 are responsible for directing dietary calcium to the places in your body that need it (like your bones and teeth!).

Without these important vitamins, calcium can actually end up in your arteries and other areas where it can cause real trouble.

Vitamin K2 can be found in grass-fed butter and meat.

Vitamin D is made from being out in the sunlight and can also be found in a few foods like mushrooms, fatty fish, beef liver and eggs. Studies have found that women with higher intake of vitamin D during pregnancy deliver babies who have a lower risk of developing cavities. Studies also show that children with cavities tend to have lower levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin A can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, lettuce, cantaloupe, bell peppers, fish, liver and some fruits. Research has found that higher vitamin A intake is linked with lower tooth decay in children.

Vitamin E can be found in sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, cooked beet greens, pumpkin, red peppers, asparagus and avocado.

Are You Absorbing Your Food?

If your body is unable to absorb the nutrients it needs from the food you eat, then it doesn’t matter how much kale or broccoli you eat – you will still experience tooth decay and other symptoms of malabsorptive diseases.

Celiac Disease and other major gut issues are linked with unusually high rates of tooth decay.

Leaky gut, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis may also make nutrient absorption a big issue.

Fluoride-Free Homemade Toothpaste

One skill I want to teach you today is making your own fluoride-free, remineralizing toothpaste!

  1. Combine the clay, baking soda, salt and peppermint.
  2. Allow to air dry, then store in an airtight container.
  3. Every week or two mix the finished tooth powder with a little peppermint tea or water until it forms a moist paste. (Making only enough for 1-2 weeks ensures it stays fresh)
  4. Use as you would normal toothpaste.

With just a little bit of work and research, most all of the chemical-laden products that we use on a day to day basis can ALL be made right at home with SAFE and EFFECTIVE ingredients!
