One of the many words people who are trying to lose weight dread to hear. They are very controversial because many people think negative things about carbs. We hear that our body needs carbs, but then we hear that carbs are the leading cause of obesity. It’s pretty easy to be confused about carbs.
So, which is it? There is actually two sides of this. There are good carbs and bad carbs.
Good Carbs vs. Bad Carbs
Carbohydrates are a vital part of a healthy diet; however, it does not mean that we should go about getting any type of carbohydrates in order to meet the daily requirement for our body. Carbohydrates, also referred to as carbs, are the most common sources of energy in any living being. The difference between the bad carbs and the good carbs is based on the chemical makeup and what our body does with them.
What Are Bad Carbs?
Most carbohydrates are considered to be bad carbs; this is because they have a simple structure that is easily broken down and gets to the bloodstream fast, causing a rise in blood sugar levels. In addition to this, the excess glucose is stored as fat, resulting in obesity.
Bad carbs are less to no help to the body because they are low in fiber and higher in sugars. Cookies and cakes are snacks that fall under the bad carbs category. Fruits and vegetables are also simple carbs, but the good thing about them is that they have fiber and this completely changes the way the body processes them. The fiber slows down their digestion and this makes them more like complex carbohydrates.
Simple carbs are responsible for excess fats in our body that in turn lead to weight gain or worse, obesity. Weight gain and obesity pose risks to your body and may cause cardiovascular risks and even heart attack. It is, therefore, important to limit bad carbs in your diet in order to be on the safe side.
Examples of bad carbs that you should limit:
- Desserts and pastries
- White bread, white rice and white pasta
What Are Good Carbs?
They are complex carbs that take much more time to process and in turn give you even more energy. These carbs generally have a lower glycemic load, which implies that after they have been processed, they will cause lower amounts of sugars to be released and put your system in a more consistent state. This consistency in the release of energy can help keep you going throughout the day and will not have any risk to your body.
Adapting to good carbs is as simple as replacing the bad carbs with the complex carbs, for example, instead of taking white rice, take brown rice. When buying carbs, it is important to read the labels so that you know whether you are buying simple or complex carbs.
Examples of the good carbs you should start using in your diet:
- Brown Rice
- Whole wheat spaghetti
- Whole grain cereal
- Whole grain pasta
- Whole wheat bread
By using good carbs, you can be much healthier and the risks of getting chronic illnesses will be greatly reduced.
