Bees have been a consistent part of human life for thousands of years. There are around 16,000 species of bees, only seven of which are responsible for creating honey. Mention of honey bees are found in many religious works such as The Talmud, The Bible, The Torah, The Koran, the Scrolls of Orient, the writings of ancient Greece and Rome and The Book of Mormon.

Aboriginal tribes feast on bees and place large value on their pollen and honey. An estimated 40% of the world’s food supply depends on pollination by honey bees!

The western world realized the benefits of bee products when investigating Russian Beekeepers who regularly lived past 100 years of age. These beekeepers ate raw honey, rich in bee pollen every day.

When most people think of bee products they think of one thing: honey. Pure, raw honey is without exaggeration an incredible source of nutrition and should be a part of everyone’s diet. But honey is not the only contribution bee’s can make to our diet!

Let’s dive into two of my favorite bee products…

Royal Jelly

What’s inside:

Protein, B vitamins, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, inositol and folic acid

Royal Jelly is a milk like secretion created by the glands of worker honeybees. It is used to feed baby larva and adult queen bees.

Health Benefits:

Royal jelly is used for asthma, hay fever liver disease, kidney disease, bone fractures, menstrual cramps, high cholesterol, skin disorders, sexual function and for boosting the immune system. It also stimulates collagen and protects skin from UV radiation – both of which are important for preventing wrinkles and skin discoloration.

In a study done to find the effectiveness of Royal Jelly on humans, Japanese researchers took 61 healthy volunteers and and gave them either royal jelly or a placebo for 6 months. By the end of the study there were significant differences between the two groups. Those who took the royal jelly showed improved glucose tolerance and better mental health, as well as accelerated conversion of testosterone.

How to take it:

Royal jelly comes in capsule form, frozen fresh, or in powdered form. It has a strong, bitter taste and is best when mixed into a smoothie or protein shake. Follow recommended dosage. You can also find honey that is mixed with royal jelly. Yum!

Bee Pollen

What’s inside:

All 22 elements of the human system, vitamins C, A, E, D, and K, folic acid, protein, amino acids, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, magnesium, copper, iodine, zinc, etc, etc…

Health Benefits:

bee pollenBee pollen is pollen from flowering plants that is collected by bees and formed into granules. It is the most complete food found in nature and has all 22 elements that make up the human system. Humans have been unable to recreate or synthesize it in laboratories. Bee pollen is said to have five to seven times more protein than beef!

Bee pollen is a great source of energy and can also help athletes recover more quickly. It is sometimes known as “Mother Nature’s natural energy booster” and is used by doctors, coaches, athletes, and professionals to increase zest, stamina, and endurance.

In Chinese medicine, bee pollen is used to reduce cravings and addictions, prevent disease and infections, extend longevity, improve vitality and to help with blood formation. It is also used to increase libido and improve sexual function.

Bee pollen is thought to help with weight control by correcting chemical imbalances that lead to weight fluctuations.

Antibacterial properties: Researchers have found a substance in bee pollen that acts as an antibiotic. So far it has shown effective against salmonella and a few bacteria strains.

Studies have also been done to show the effectiveness of bee pollen in protecting cancer patients from damage caused by radiation and chemotherapy, as well as providing an immune system boost. In Dr Mercola’s article about bee pollen, he talks about a study done on women with uterine cancer:

“…Dr. Peter Hernuss and colleagues conducted a study of 25 women suffering from inoperable uterine cancer. Because surgery was impossible, the women were treated with chemotherapy. The lucky women given bee pollen with their food quickly exhibited a higher concentration of cancer-fighting immune-system cells, increased antibody production, and a markedly improved level of infection-fighting and oxygen carrying red blood cells (hemoglobin). These women suffered less from the awful side effects of chemotherapy as well. Bee pollen lessened the terrible nausea that commonly accompanies the treatment and helped keep hair loss to a minimum. The women also slept better at night. The control group receiving a placebo did not experience comparable relief.”

How to eat them:

I have a little shaker full of bee pollen in my fridge that I often add to my smoothies. You can also use granules in yogurt or cereal, homemade granola, protein bars and raw desserts, sprinkled over salad or in salad dressing, etc.
