From Self-Pity to Self-Confident – Paula’s
Written by: Paula Scimone
My transformation started in 2010 when I had my gallbladder removed. While in surgery, the doctor noticed that my liver looked like “cobblestone instead of smooth paving.” He took a biopsy of my liver and thought that I must have had Hepatitis sometime in the past. I didn’t.
The diagnosis of the biopsy was NonAlcoholic Steatohepatitis, or NASH. It is rare; only 2-5% of Americans have it. It’s a silent disease and most times is not detected until it’s too late. NASH is fat in the liver that develops inflammation and cirrhosis, unlike the very common fatty liver. I am thankful every day that the doctor took the time to look around while working on me.
I found out that nobody could treat the NASH but myself. Although I was overweight, I was no different than most; I was not TOO overweight… or so I thought. I was 46 years old, 208 lbs, 5’9” with a BMI of 29.4. I was told that I needed to stop eating fatty and fried foods, to lose about 60 lbs and that my BMI needed to be at 24. Easy, right?
Prior to all of this, my eating habits were like the habits of everyone else I knew. I drank soda all the time, I went out for fast food and restaurant meals almost every day and ice cream was my dessert almost every night with cookies as a close second (you know the cookies I’m talking about – the chocolate sandwiches with cream in the middle).
This news prompted my mission – I was determined to get healthy and I vowed I would not have cancer in 5 years, as long as I could help it.
The first thing I changed was not letting myself eat fried food and eating foods with low to no fat anytime I could. I tried every diet out there and lost a whopping 10 lbs. I was scared and frustrated. Every doctor’s visit at 3 months was worse or no better than the last. I was on two high blood pressure medications and one cholesterol medication and was getting hormone replacement therapy on top of it all.
In July 2013, I was talking to a friend who looked fabulous and she told me she was juicing. I knew from all her results that I wanted to do this. I felt deep inside that this was it. I bought a juicer and followed FitLife.tv’s plan as best I could.
In March of 2014, I enrolled in the small group coaching program and lost 35 lbs, got off all 4 medications, stunned my liver specialist and now have a BMI of 25.6.
Through this program, I have learned to eat whole foods, when to eat my meals and how to best prepare them. I have learned how to incorporate fitness into my daily life without it being a burden. My mindset has changed tremendously. I had let society convince me that this – that gaining weight, losing energy, suffering pain – is just what happens when you get old, only it’s not. I have no more joint pain or foggy brain, I now sleep through the night and I am happy.
I didn’t realize that I was living in self-pity and mediocrity and using food as a reward for not doing what I knew I should be. Taking the easy, lazy way out sure did get me somewhere, just not where I wanted to be deep down inside. This lifestyle change cleared my head and allowed me to think happily and confidently. It has not only affected me, it has spilled over to my family and my daughter’s family.
My favorite juice is a mix of lemon, ginger, turmeric, cucumber, spinach and celery. It’s so good!
One thing I would tell anyone who is looking for changes is to not give up and don’t settle. Never settle. Surround yourself with like-minded, goal-oriented people. We are out there!
As a result of this program, a passion from my youth for health and fitness was reignited in me. I have completed the FitLife.tv Coaching Certification and I am now helping others with their transformations.
Taking care of my health and learning to put myself first was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I will never look back! 🙂
