Fit-Fat to FitLife – A True Transformation Story
By: Jill Smart
My entire life has been a battle of me against my body. Seriously. I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember.
When I was a child, everyone referred to me as chubby and my mom blamed my weight on the fact that I struggled with allergies. At the age of 12, my mom enrolled me in Weight Watcher’s classes and I just remember having to sit through meetings and wondering, what did I do wrong and why did I have to be there? Growing into my teens, I had thinned out a bit with my growth spurt, but my family still constantly commented on my weight. I didn’t understand why I was overweight. I was pretty active and loved riding my bike, I walked to school daily and was always outside playing. I felt as though I was being punished, but couldn’t figure out why.
In my mid-twenties, I joined my first gym and I found it fascinating! I would spend hours upon hours there, absolutely sure that this was my answer and that I just needed to move my body more and eat less. I thought this was my new lease on life; my aha moment; my epiphany! Sadly, it wasn’t. Continuing to fall back into old habits, my weight would go up and down, as I tried every fad diet, pill and powder on the market.
Fast forward to my life as an adult. To this day, I still struggle with loving my body and my method of choice for comfort and soothing is still food. For some reason, I can’t seem to break free from the bonds that food holds over me, but I won’t give up trying and I am committed to the process.
With fitness now a priority in my life, I have joined different gyms and fitness centers and have immersed myself in their group programs. Over the years, I have fallen in love with yoga, spin classes, weight lifting, swimming and finally, running. Even though I love the activity, I have never seemed to lose much weight.
In 2010, I fell in love with bootcamp style training. I loved everything about it! My trainer was passionate and wanted to see me succeed, which motivated and pushed me to keep going! He asked me to give him three months to make me a marathon runner, which intrigued me and I began training for my first half marathon that January and running it in May of 2011. I weighed 263 pounds when I ran that half marathon!
In August of that same year, I competed in my first triathlon, weighing about 250 pounds. I worked hard and was pleased with my training progress, but the weight was just coming off so slowly. I continued this lifestyle until I injured my knee in January 2013, due to an accident at work, in which I tore my meniscus and was informed that I had advanced arthritis in my knee as well. I was devastated! Arthroscopic surgical repair left me with permanent nerve damage to my quadricep muscle. After my knee continued to decline instead of heal, it was recommended that I try to lose some weight. My progress had gone out the window and I was back up to 276 lbs. I felt like I was starting over.
I purchased my first juicer in September 2013 after watching a documentary on juicing and I was sure that this time, this was going to be the answer for me. I began juicing, mainly fruit and my weight kept increasing. I knew I was doing something wrong, but I didn’t know what. While searching the internet, I came across an infomercial by Drew Canole for the Alpha Reset program. After watching it, I knew this was the right program for me and I wasted no time clicking on that “buy” button. I was ready to try something different and join Fitlife and the Juicing Animals community. In my first month of the Alpha Reset, I lost 15 pounds! I listened/watched every membership call I could and commented on everything that I saw and even won a juicer!
I was committed, I took action and it was finally paying off!
When I was told that I would need to have a knee replacement surgery, I contacted Mae Desmond, coaching director at Fitlife.tv, for guidance. She gave me some nutritional direction and I lost another 20 pounds prior to my surgery! After surgery, struggling with swelling in my knee, I decided that it was time to try small group coaching. I started in February 2014 and lost another 20 pounds that same month! I fell so in love with the program that I inquired about becoming a coach myself. In March 2014, I got my first opportunity to assistant coach with Mae and I loved every moment of it! During this time, I was still working on my own transformation.
Today, I am now a Certified Fitlife.tv Transformation Coach, my weight loss to date is 85 pounds and I continue to work on my last 30 pounds through the Juice Cycling protocol. Over the course of 2014, I eliminated sugar, gluten, dairy, caffeine, alcohol and soy from my diet and added in lots of vegetables, fruit, lean grass-fed protein and plenty of healthy fats. My hair, skin and nails are healthier than they have ever been, I sleep like a baby and my life is abundant. I am doing things that I never could have imagined before and am so grateful. I truly love my new FitLife!
