Eating Healthy On A Budget

Let’s face it. Eating healthy can be a little more expensive than we would like it to be.

I mean, you can get a hamburger for half the price of a salad. That’s just crazy. And with the high prices of… well, pretty much everything, it can be hard.

But you don’t have to sacrifice your paycheck for your health. There are ways to eat healthy while still being on a budget. Here are a few to help get you started:

1. Plan Your Meals. Pick out one day a week where you can sit down and plan your meals for the week ahead. Make sure to take inventory of what you have in your fridge, freezer and cabinets so that you can get an idea what you have to work with. You can always use what you already have to make a meal. Make a list of the ingredients that you will need to get and make sure to stick to only that list when you shop.

2. Stick To Your Grocery List. Once you have your meals planned for the week, start making your grocery list and be sure to stick to it. Those “wants” add up pretty fast, so try not to get too distracted when you are shopping.

3. Shop The Perimeter Of The Store First. The healthier foods are usually found on the perimeter of the store such as the meat and produce sections. Shop the perimeter first so that you will be more likely to fill your cart with healthy whole foods. The center of the store (the isles) contains most of the unhealthy processed food that you want to avoid.

4. Buy Frozen Fruits And Veggies. It can be more economical for a family to purchase frozen fruits and veggies. Sometimes you may have the intention of eating those 4 heads of broccoli, only to find them in the fridge drawer later already bad.

Frozen vegetables may actually be more nutritious than the fresh ones you can pick up in the produce department. When produce is shipped over long distances, they tend to lose some of their nutrients.

When you are shopping for frozen fruit and veggies, make sure that you pick up a bag that has been flash frozen. This means that they were picked when they were ripe, blanched in hot water to kill bacteria and then frozen immediately to keep all nutrients. Frozen fruits and veggies can be kept in the freezer for several months at a time without spoiling.

5. Cook At Home. It is that simple. Cooking at home is much cheaper than eating out. Try to start making it a habit. Some people like to prep their meals for the entire week so that they are easy to just grab and go. Others like to cook one meal at a time. It is completely up to you and your lifestyle as to how you want to proceed.

6. Cook Large Portions. Sometimes it is best to cook a little extra than what you and your family can eat that night. Leftovers can be used as lunch or dinner for the next day if you know that you are going to be short on time, or they can even be packaged and frozen so that you have them for a later day.

7. Don’t Shop When You’re Hungry. If you shop when you are hungry, you will more likely end up buying even more than what you intended to. Make sure that you have a snack before you head out. Shopping hungry can lead to cravings, which then lead to impulse buys.

You can also try to stock up on sales if you have the room in your house. Stocking up will ensure that you have a common ingredient when you need it and will save you money in the long run. Check your newspapers for sales and coupons! And make sure that you don’t buy any junk food.

Shopping for healthy food doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg, although that is what it feels like sometimes. Stick to these suggestions and you will soon see that eating healthy can be just a cheap!
