I’m usually a pretty solid sleeper.

I fall asleep quickly… and seven-ish hours later I wake up.

However, that was NOT the case the past two nights. The only way I can describe my sleep the past two nights is “fake sleeping.”

You know what I’m talking about… when you lay there and kind of dream, kind of sleep, toss and turn and wonder how the heck it became morning so fast?

Let’s just say that during the following days, I found it hard to be a human. My brain was in a fog and my eyes just wanted to close (not to mention I started daydreaming about huge cups of sweetened coffee drinks, pizza and every other junk food imaginable).

I needed to boost my mood STAT. Luckily, there are health and natural food options that are readily available that you can consume when you are looking for a little pick-me-up.

Check them out below!

Eat These Foods To Boost Your Mood

Turmeric
  • Contains curcumin
    • The pigment that gives it its yellow-orange color
    • Has many medicinal effects
    • Has neuroprotective properties
    • Helps enhance mood
    • Helps ease depression
Vegetables
  • Especially leafy greens like spinach
    • Rich in folate, which helps your body produce mood-regulating neurotransmitters
    • One study found that people who ate the most folate had a lower rate of depression
  • Eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help calm your nerves
Dark Chocolate
  • Triggers your brain to produce anandamide, the “bliss compound”
  • Contains chemicals that prolong the feel-good aspects of anandamide
  • Has been referred to as the new anti-anxiety drug
Green Tea
  • Contains theanine
    • An amino acid that has psychoactive properties and crosses the blood-brain barrier
    • Increases your levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), dopamine, serotonin and alpha wave activity
    • May reduce physical and mental stress
  • Helps produce feelings of relaxation
Mushrooms
  • Rich in the antioxidant selenium
    • Low levels of selenium have been linked to anxiety
  • Great source of vitamin D
    • Supports healthy mood
    • Also get regular sun exposure to optimize your vitamin D levels
Organic Black Coffee
  • Coffee triggers a mechanism in your brain that releases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
    • Actives your brain stem cells to convert into new neurons
    • Improves your brain health
    • Low levels of BDNF may play a role in depression

Dark chocolate? Black coffee? DONE and DONE.

Happy eating everyone!
