It seems that many people are switching over to herbal home remedies and dropping their over-the-counter medications and prescriptions. And with the constant rise in health care costs, that is perfectly understandable.
Here is a quick run-down of a few popular herbs and what they can do and be used for:
#1. Valerian Root
Valerian root is known for its sedative effects, which can ease the symptoms of many ailments. It also contains anti-anxiety properties that can help calm your nerves and allow you to relax.
Valerian Root Eases:

- Anxiety
- Nervousness
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Menstrual cramps
- Helps with managing stress
How To Use It:
You can find the actual root and make it into a tea. Valerian root is also found in powdered form and in tablet or capsule form.
Tea: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoonful of dried valerian root. Steep the tea for 5 to 10 minutes.
#2. Garlic
Garlic contains compounds that have potent medicinal properties. It has been used through history for these medicinal properties. Garlic also acts as a natural antibiotic that can help ease the ailments of many conditions and can help relieve the symptoms of a cold or the flu. Medical News Today states that diallyl sulfide, a compound in garlic, was 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics.
Garlic Eases:
- Bronchitis
- High blood pressure

How To Use It:
You can purchase garlic fresh and it can also be found as a tablet that can be taken once per day. If you decide to purchase fresh garlic, it is easy to incorporate more garlic in your diet. Keep in mind that garlic is most effective when it is raw. The garlic clove should be crushed and exposed to air for about 10 minutes before it is consumed in order to activate the compounds to their full potential. You can add the juice of garlic cloves to tomato juice, soups or drinks.
#3. Echinacea
Echinacea is commonly used to help colds and fight against upper respiratory infections. It has been proven to increase your immune system and help reduce the symptoms of colds. Echinacea also contains an anti-inflammatory property, which allows this herb to have more uses than for just colds.

- Pain such as a toothache or a headache
- Sore throats

- To help a cold, experts suggest taking between 500 and 1,000 milligrams three times a day for 5 to 7 days or up until you start feeling better, but not more than 10 days. You should also make sure not to take echinacea on an empty stomach as it can cause mild discomfort.
- For wounds and cuts, you can apply an echinacea cream or ointment as needed to aid the wound.
- For dental health, take 4 to 6 capsules of echinacea three times a day, or you can take 1 to 2 tablespoons of powdered root mixed with 1 cup of water three times a day.
