Turmeric: The Best Dosage and Method For Your Health Issue
How Much Turmeric Should You Take?
If you’re reading this, I’m gonna bet you’ve already heard tons about the golden magic of turmeric. If not, here’s a quick recap…
Turmeric has powerful benefits that include:
- Reducing inflammation
- Acting as a powerful antioxidant
- Naturally detoxing the liver
- Purifying the blood
- Providing protection from free radicals
- Preventing early aging
And so much more!
Combine turmeric with black pepper and the piperine compound in the pepper increases the bioavailability of curcumin (the leading factor in turmeric) by 2000%.
Pretty awesome stuff, right? Now, onto the big question…
How much turmeric should you take?
There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding how much turmeric should be taken daily and how often it should be taken. This is mostly due to the fact that there are so many different forms of turmeric to choose from.
- Fresh turmeric root
- Dried turmeric root powder
- Supplements with various curcumin percentages
- Fluid extract
The biggest determining factor behind how much turmeric you should be taking every day is the amount of curcumin you are consuming. Curcumin is the magic compound behind turmeric’s powerful remedying abilities and is the detail you want to pay attention to.
There are various opinions about how much turmeric (cucrumin) you should be consuming daily. According to University of Maryland Medical Center…
- Cut root: 1.5 – 3 grams per day
- Dried, powdered root: 1 – 3 grams per day
- Standardized powder (curcumin): 400 – 600 mg, 3 times per day
- Fluid extract (1:1): 30 – 90 drops a day
- Tincture (1:2): 15 – 30 drops, 4 times per day
If you are looking to use turmeric for more specific purposes, it’s advised that you consult your physician or other medical professional. Here are a few basic dosage recommendations from WebMD:
- Upset stomach (dyspepsia): 500 mg of turmeric, 4 times per day
- Osteoarthritis: 500 mg twice daily of a specific turmeric extract (Meriva, Indena); 500 mg four times daily of a non-commercial product has also been used
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 500mg twice daily of a specific formulation of the turmeric constituent, curcumin (BCM-95®, Arjuna Natural Extracts, India), has been used
Again, if you’re looking to use turmeric for specific health purposes, be sure to consult a medical professional.
Generally though, powdered turmeric tends to be the most commonly used form of turmeric. Even just one teaspoon of turmeric a day can make a difference to your overall health. Here are the recommended daily powder doses:
- Cut root: 1.5 – 3.0 grams
- Dried powder: 1.0 – 3.0 grams
- Supplement: 1.2 – 1.8 grams
