Do These 20 Things IMMEDIATELY to Avoid Cancer, Debt and Unhappiness Later in Life

Written by: Jenna Barrington

Living in your 30’s is an exciting time. You know yourself better than you ever have, you most likely know what you want to do in life and what you don’t – and you now have the opportunity to set the stage for the rest of your life.

Thinking about the future can be frightening, but the truth is, the future will always be something just out of reach. Your NOWS make your TOMORROWS. So now is a better time than any to start living in a way that will make you happy today and tomorrow and give you the best chance for being comfortable and still thriving in your 50’s.

Recently on Quora, someone asked what they can do in their 30’s that will benefit them in their 50’s. They’ve gotten a lot of great answers so far. Here are some of the best as well as some of our own!

20 Things To Do At Age 30 That Will Benefit You At Age 50

#1 Repair And Improve Family Relationships

You may not always see eye-to-eye with your family. You may feel like you live a completely different life than them. But one of the most common things people regret when they get old is not taking more time to love and care for the people who should have been closest to them – their family. Do your part to love, forgive, support and embrace your family. You won’t regret it.

#2 Spend Time Outdoors

There is something so revitalizing and refreshing about being outside. When you are exhausted with life or feeling under the weather, spend time out in nature. Take time to appreciate the beauties and wonders of Mother Earth. There is a healing power we can find nowhere else but amidst trees, grass, rivers, mountains and oceans.

#3 Move Your Body

Our bodies were created to be in motion. A body that is made to sit all day becomes like a stagnant pool of water. To optimize your health and longevity, exercise often. Make it a huge priority. Your ability to enjoy life now and in your future depends greatly on the health and wellbeing of your body. Take care of yourself. Learn to enjoy being in motion.

#4 Stop Eating Junk/Processed Foods

You can make all the money in the world and still not be able to buy good health later on if you don’t choose it right now. Ditch the fast food, leave the processed stuff out of your grocery basket and fill your body with whole real foods from mother nature that will nurture and heal you and set you up for a life of energy and vitality.

#5 Stop Smoking

Premature death caused by smoking is one of the most preventable deaths. Yet thousands of people die due to the side effects of smoking every year. Give up this nasty habit, as hard as it may seem and free your body of over 800 additives and 4000 chemicals that get into smoker’s lungs from their cigarettes.

#6 Save Money

At this time in your life, with a little careful budgeting, you most likely have a good portion of income that is not needed for day-to-day living expenses. Make it a habit to save money every single paycheck – even if it is only a few dollars. This is one of the most lucrative habits you can possibly learn if you want to be wealthy in your 50’s!

#7 Learn To Be Present

A lot of your happiness and contentment from one day to the next depends on your ability to be fully present. When you are constantly reliving the past and over-thinking the future, you miss out on the now and therefore, miss out on your entire life. Practice mindfulness. Learn to meditate. Spend time in silence. Do things that bring your awareness fully into the now.

#8 Set Goals

Setting goals, writing them down and actively pursuing them will help you create not only a great future, but also a past full of amazing experiences and growth. Don’t put off your goals. They will help you reach your full potential. And don’t be discouraged if you fail – failure is actually a major part of success. At Fitlife we like to say – Fail Forward!

#9 Sleep

Don’t get so caught up in the go-go-go that you lose precious sleep. When kids keep you up, slow down during the day so that you can rest and get some needed shut-eye. Make sure you are getting at least one uninterrupted 4-hour cycle of sleep every day.

#10 Take Care Of Your Teeth

An unbelievably large number of common illnesses and diseases actually start from poor dental hygiene. Unsolved problems in your mouth can lead to greater problems later on. Use natural methods to keep your mouth in good shape and take care of problems (cavities) when they are small.

#11 Memories Not Things

Studies have shown that those who focus on making memories rather than buying things feel happier and more fulfilled. Things don’t last – memories do. Make memories with yourself and your loved ones.

#12 Serve

Always take time to give back. There is nothing so rewarding and worthwhile as taking time to care for others in the world around you. Serving helps pull you out of your own head and problems and find joy in giving to someone else. When you give, the energy will always come back to you.

#13 Do Things That Scare You

Don’t get too comfortable! Do something that scares you once in awhile. Ride that roller coaster, go on that trip, hold that snake, talk to someone intimidating, sign up for a dance class. Getting out of your comfort zone will help you grow and keep you from getting old!

#14 Read

In a world filled with TV shows, movies, social media and entertainment, it can be easy to let your books gather dust. Remember this – at the end of your life, you will never regret not spending more time watching the television. Books expand your mind and connect you to those of the past, present and future. Books make you smarter. Books expand your perspective and fill your head with new ideas. Books are gold. Always have a current book that you are reading.

#15 Travel

It has never been easier to travel to different parts of the world. Don’t miss out on opportunities to meet new cultures, see new sights and walk in different lands. Travel can change and expand you in ways little else can.

#16 Love And Understand Yourself

You have someone with you, guaranteed, for the rest of your life. YOU. And you deserve all the love and understanding that you can muster. Spend time with yourself. Discover what makes you happy. Learn to enjoy self-discovery. I know you spend most of your days caring for everyone else, but don’t forget that you are also of great importance.

#17 Journal

You won’t remember as much as you think you will. Take time to write down experiences from your life, both the good ones and the hard ones. This will enable you to look back and see how far you’ve come and also remember everything that has filled up your life.

#18 Care For Your Friends

Sacrifice for your friends. You will want people you are close to when you are older and the relationships you cultivate now will bring you much fulfillment and happiness later on. Take time – even just a little – every week to reach out to friends who you want in your life for years to come.

#19 Declutter

The less stuff you have stuffed in your space, the more space you will have to breath and feel mentally clear! It is easy at this point in life to start holding onto things you don’t really need. Get into the habit of selling or giving away things you don’t use, throwing away the garbage laying around and putting a priority on cleanliness. It will do wonders for your health and keep you from having a house full of junk that is too exhausting to go through later on.

#20 Start A Garden – A Real One

If you own or are planning to own a house, pick one where you can create your own garden, plant your own fruit trees and create your own growing systems. By the time you’re in your 50’s, you should be able to live mostly off of your own home-grown food.
