DIY Homemade Natural Coconut Oil Lip Balm
Written by: Drew Canole
Here’s a fact I’m sure you can agree with… nothing created in a laboratory will ever come close to replacing what is already in nature! This is especially true in terms of food and the things we use on a daily basis to care for our bodies.
Did you know that what you put on your skin ends up in your bloodstream?
On Eco-Voice.org I found an article and I quote:
Our skin, the largest eliminatory organ in the body and our first line of immunity, is permeable to all chemicals. Medical research shows that significant amounts of cosmetic ingredients, including carcinogenic substances, penetrate the skin and end up in the blood stream. Many chemicals in cosmetics don’t cause obvious signs of toxicity on the skin but slowly poison us through repeated use.
Don’t believe it? Think about this: several medications and drugs are now being administered through transdermal skin patches which, in some cases, have been shown to be 95% more effective than oral drugs. Wow!
Because of this it is important to pay attention to what we are putting on our skin, especially things that we use over and over and over again.
Today I am going to give you an awesome recipe for your very own homemade coconut oil lipbalm! All the ingredients for the lip balm have multiple uses, especially for those interested in making their own products.
Why Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is one of those great multi-taskers that we use all the time here at FitLife! Not only does it pack a great nutritional punch, but it is one of the best oils you could possibly cook with because it can be heated to very high temperatures without losing its nutritional integrity or becoming rancid. It is also awesome for your skin!
Coconut oil hydrates and nourishes the skin, protects the skin from infection and is rich in antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It even works as a natural sunscreen.
What Kind Should I Use
We recommend an unrefined virgin coconut oil. Thrive Market and Nature’s Way generally have great deals on virgin coconut oil and you can also find it at Whole Foods Market or at your local Costco. We also like Viva Labs.
Coconut Oil Lip Balm
You can find organic lip balm with coconut oil base or you can make it yourself! Lip balm is surprisingly easy to make at home and it will save you money in the long run. And when Christmas comes around, it can make a simple, yet appreciated gift! Because lip balm is something you use on your face close to your mouth and nose, it is important to know exactly what ingredients you are using.
Homemade Coconut Oil Lip Balm
- Mix all the ingredients except the essential oils in a glass jar.
- Set the jar inside a pot full of water on the stove and wait for the ingredients to melt, being careful not to get any water into the jar.
- When everything is melted turn off the stove and after a few minutes add the essential oils.
- Leave the jar in the warm water to keep melted while you use a dropper to fill containers of your choice.
- Let sit undisturbed for several hours until formula hardens.
- Store somewhere cool and dry, and enjoy! Your homemade lip balm should last for a year or more.
