The next time you are at your local nursery, pick up some lemon balm. This is actually a green leafy plant, not the little yellow fruit. Lemon balm, which is also known as bee leaf, is actually the larger cousin of the mint plant.

Medicinal Powers Of Lemon Balm

This powerful and fragrant herb is full of vitamin C, calcium and magnesium and is a common essential oil. It has long been used as a home remedy for things such as both viral and bacterial infections. Common balm is good for calming anxiety, depression and heartache.

“Balm is sovereign for the brain, strengthening the memory and powerfully chasing away melancholy,” John Evelyn (Herbalist from the 1600’s). In ancient times, lemon balm was known as the “elixir of life,” according to the Paracelsus.

The unique blend of the oil works well on the gut and as an antispasmodic agent. When calming the nervous system, it acts as a mild sedative that can help with sadness, grief and insomnia. Pair it with some passion flower a few hours before bed and you will be calm in time for a restful night of sleep. This remedy also helps with seasonal depression.

Word Of Caution: Lemon balm inhibits the thyroid. If you suffer from low thyroid activity (hypothyroidism), then only use with the supervision of a doctor.

Nothing helps you de-stress at the end of a long day better than a nice, soothing bath! Both stimulating and relaxing, this type of bath is utilized for dispelling “negative energy,” helping to lift the spirits and providing good old bathtime fun.

Lemon Balm Bath

Ingredients
  • 2 parts fresh or dried lemon balm leaf
  • 1 part chamomile flower
  • 1 part lavender bud
  • 1 part rose petal
Instructions
  1. To prepare for your bath, you will want to mix together the herbs. Tie ½ cup or more of the herb mixture into a larger cloth bag, an extra-large strainer, or even an old nylon stocking. Fasten this to the faucet of your tub or shower.
  2. Allow the hot water (as hot as possible) run through the herbs for a few moments. Then remove your herbs and fill up the bath, adjusting the water temperature to a comfortable level.
  3. Soak in your bath for at least 30 minutes. If you tied the herbs in a cloth bag, use it to gently massage your body. Once you are finished, step out, dry off and complete this gentle massage using somelavender massage oil.

After writing this article, I made sure to take a lemon balm bath and it is something that I suggest you do as often as possible. It is super relaxing and when you are done, you feel rejuvenated, no matter how long and stressful your day was.

You must try this wonderful technique to help get the most out of our bath. If you have come across any other awesome techniques for improving your bathtime, we would love to hear all about them in the comments below!
