It can be really confusing to try and differentiate between a diet and a lifestyle, but we can all agree that there are certain definitions for both of these terms.

A “diet” is a temporary solution when you are trying to lose weight. It consists of changing the way that you eat and what you eat before you return to your previous eating habits. While a diet does usually focus on what you eat, how much you eat and your physical activity, it only provides a temporary solution and does not usually end in a long-term thing.

Lifestyle, on the other hand, is the ultimate goal and includes a variety of areas of health, including fitness, nutrition, environment, mental health, social relationships and spirituality.

There are so many differences between diet and lifestyle and it all depends on which angle you want to take life from. To some it is just about the way you live, to others it is their core value. People think differently and the whole concept of life is evolving into something better.

Here are some of the main factors that differentiate diet and lifestyle…

What Do They Really Mean?

A number of people go on diets to lose weight, but then everybody has a diet plan to follow, meaning that it is generally the way that you eat; it is your lifestyle approach to healthy eating. When you are on a diet to lose weight, you need to make sure that it is a good fit for you.

Lifestyle, on the other hand, leads to a new perspective, positive behaviors and the creation of attainable goals. It can be achieved by a series of steps that implement additions, eliminations and substitutions and focuses on applying these principles in all areas of life.

What The World Thinks

A diet is an image the world puts up of men and women, how their appearance should be. If you do not look like them, you need to do whatever it takes to be like them. A diet offers no love and leads an empty life. When you look at magazines, what do you see? Someone with a hot body? Most of those images are edited and may not even be real. The word “diet” makes you think of all the things you cannot have.

As humans we have probably gone on and off millions of diets. Diets are things we do to lose a certain amount of weight for an occasion like a wedding or class reunion. And once that event is over, we end up gaining all that weight back and sometimes, even more. Diets are all about one person’s opinion of what we cannot have or what we should live on. Diets are often one failed attempt after another, whereas a healthy lifestyle makes you think of all the things you can have and do with your life.

A Diet Is Temporary, Lifestyle Is Permanent

As mentioned, a diet is something that you go on and off of. A lifestyle is when you finally make the decision to stick with healthier living, through the thick and the thin. And you figure out how to add your favorite foods in your life in a healthy manner. A well planned lifestyle gives you better quality of life, improves your health and conditioning and offers alternate healthy foods that satisfy those high calorie, high salt food cravings you may have.

Core Values

A lifestyle includes a change of attitude, a change of heart and a fresh view about yourself and who you want to become. That is what is important! When you see the value that is within yourself, that is when you have obtained the point of a true lifestyle change.

A well worked out lifestyle includes way more than a body transformation. What we make of the word “lifestyle” is of two things. The life of an individual person and the events that make up a life. Each of us has a life, one we are crafting as we go. Each of us sees life a little differently.
