This Ruby Red Fruit May Help Prevent Brain Inflammation and Alzheimer’s
By Drew Canole
Did you know that pomegranates are an ancient symbol of immortality, fertility and vitality?
Turns out this might be more than just an interesting historical fact.
Pomegranates are now being studied for their various healing compounds and new research is suggesting that they may be a key in delaying the progress of dementia.
Dementia is a topic no one likes to think about. Unfortunately, a growing number of people are being touched by various forms of dementia every year, whether they deal with it themselves or see it hurting a loved one or acquaintance.
What makes dementia so scary? Well for starters, we still haven’t found a cure. Not only that, but we are still dabbling around various theories as to WHY people develop this progressive disease in the first place.
Research in 2013 found Alzheimer’s disease to be the fastest growing threat to American’s health.
More than five million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s and even more suffer from other dementia-related diseases. Globally, the number of sufferers has reached a staggering 44.4 million.
Maybe the answer isn’t as far away OR as complicated as we might think.
A particular component in pomegranates called punicalagin has been getting a lot of attention by researchers lately because of its ability to prevent the inflammation of certain brain cells. This type of inflammation causes destruction of further brain cells progressively – worsening symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and causing irreparable damage.
Although it doesn’t necessarily cure dementia, it can prevent neuro-inflammation, which in turn slows down the progression of the disease and in many cases, decreases certain symptoms.
Dr. Olajide, leading researcher in the studies of punicalagin, thinks that pomegranates may benefit those with other inflammatory diseases as well as those with Alzheimer’s.
This research is continuing to take place until the specifics are understood better, but the current findings are very positive.
What other benefits can be found in pomegranates?
Lower risk of developing heart disease
The same compound that helps with neuroinflammation has also been shown to significantly lower the chances of getting various heart diseases. Studies have shown that people who drink just 1 ounce of 100% pomegranate juice daily had arterial plaque reduction of up to 30% (not sugar-laden brands, you want 100% pure juice, nothing added).
Help get rid of canker sores
You can consume the pomegranate membrane in order to help get rid of canker sores or other mouth ulcers.
Slow down wrinkles
Pomegranates contain punicic acid, an important omega fatty acid that is particularly good for the skin and improving elasticity.
Some research shows that drinking pomegranate juice may help prevent the buildup of dental plaque.
Boost immune system function
Research studying the polyphenol content of pomegranates found that pomegranate extract may inhibit bacterial growth of various human pathogens including E. Coli and Staphylococcus.
Nature continues to surprise us with her many incredible healing foods! Some cultures believe that for almost every human disease or ailment, there is a cure to be found in nature.
