Costco’s New Commitment To Organic Produce And Farms

Written by: Lindsay Sibson

OOOOOOH the fresh feels of coming home with shopping bags full of bright and colorful organic produce!

Your refrigerator instantly becomes a wonderland of vibrant colors and enticing scents and is chock full of health enhancing goodness.

However, with the demand for organic produce continuing to rise day by day… will there be enough for EVERYONE?

The Demand For Organic

As one of the largest distributors of organic food products in the USA, Costco is selling SO MUCH organic produce that they are having difficulty keeping up with the customer’s demand.

As Costco CEO, Craig Jelinek, explained during a shareholder meeting:

“We cannot get enough organic to stay in business day in and day out.”

According to the Organic Trade Association, sales of organic food skyrocketed from $11.3 billion in 2004 to $35.98 billion in 2014!

Association spokeswoman, Angela Jagiello, explains:

“Demand is increasing. But we’re not seeing the same level of farmland. We’re not seeing the level of growth we need in domestic supply to meet demand.”

So what is a business to do?

An Organic Solution

Because of the continual rising demand for organic produce, Costco was under pressure to come up with a solution – and they DID (and it’s a cleverly innovative one too boot!).

To meet the demands of their customers, Costco decided to BUY land and equipment for farmers. This smart decision now allows Costco to start growing their OWN organic produce.

While the idea is still in its infancy, the project is showing promising results on the organic produce front.

Solution Stats

So far, Costco has partnered with Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce, a San Diego-based wholesaler:

  • Costco loaned money for them to buy 1,200 acres of land in Baja, California
  • Money was also loaned to purchase equipment

With this idea of retailers financially helping farmers to grow more produce, Costco is the ONLY business that is encouraging and enabling farmers to GO ORGANIC!

The transition from conventional to organic farming is all consuming (and costly) for farmers. The change typically takes years and a lot of money, not to mention the land needed to grow organic produce is VERY expensive and sparse.

However, despite these challenges, Costco remains committed to their organic farming initiative – way to go, COSTCO! Impressive!

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
