Concentrated Juice: Is It Healthy And What’s The Alternative?

Written by: Kat Gal

It’s summer time. You want a delicious cold juice. But what kind of juice should you choose?

As you are reaching for that delicious orange juice box or perhaps your favorite tropical juice or that refreshing citrus juice, you get confused. Deciding on the flavor is one thing, but considering the health factor is another.

What does juice made from concentrate mean anyway? How about juice “not from concentrate?” Does orange juice “not from concentrate” mean that it’s not a concentrated juice, but actually an organic, natural and fresh juice? Not necessarily and – unfortunately – is usually far from it.

Popular orange juices on the market are processed, unhealthy drinks, whether they are from concentrate or not.

Orange juice (and citrus juice, tropical juice and any other boxed juice) from concentrate is processed. It’s squeezed, pasteurized and filtered. The water content is mostly evaporated, leaving some oils and essences behind to restore the flavor of orange juice in a packaged product. Clearly, it’s not pure juice.

You will be surprised to know that orange juice (and citrus, tropical and other juices on the market) labeled “not from concentrate” are also squeezed, pasteurized and filtered. The orange juice is also being stored in an aseptic storage stripped from oxygen before the product gets packaged and shipped. Yup, “not from concentrate” orange juices and other juices are also processed and far from pure juices.

These juices receive the “100% orange juice” (or other “100% juice”) or natural label, because their flavor pack were in fact made from orange (or other fruit) essences. Tropicana and other popular “100% pure and natural” juices made “not from concentrate” are not actually fruit juices, but processed sugary drinks, causing sugar spikes and crashes and possibly inflammation.

So what can you drink instead of these popular boxed juices?

When it comes to orange juice or citrus juice, the best thing to do is to go with the old fashion way. Using a citrus juicer or even your hands, squeeze the juice out of some organic oranges, mandarins, tangerines and other citrus fruits.

When it comes to other juices, cold pressed juice is your best bet.

Choose green juices made with mostly greens, vegetables and few low-GI fruits (eg. green apples). Green juices will fill your body with vitamins and minerals without leading to blood sugar issues. You can make your own juice at home or buy cold pressed fresh green juice online or at a health food store.

If you are craving fruit juices, aside from orange juice and citrus, making blended juices (smoothies) is a better option. Fruits are sweet. When they are stripped from fiber, the rush of sugar can lead to sugar spikes and crashes. However, when blended in a smoothie, thanks to the fiber, they go into your system slower without blood sugar issues.
