Coffee Is Proven To Help Relieve Asthma Symptoms

Written by: Brandi Monasco

There are numerous articles out there that explain the health benefits of coffee and how it’s great for your digestive system and your heart. But, there are hardly any articles that explain how great coffee is for people who suffer with asthma.

What Is Asthma?

Asthma is a respiratory disease that over 10 million people in the world are battling with today. Whether or not coffee actually plays a part in relieving the horrible symptoms that come with asthma is a question that many people have.

Asthma is a condition during which your lungs become extremely sensitive to triggers such as chemicals, smoke, dust and dirt. When your lungs become sensitive, your airways start to constrict and narrow, which makes it extremely difficult for air to go in or come out, causing you to have breathing problems. You start experiencing a tight chest and you feel as though you cannot catch your breath. This results in repeated dry coughs and a gasping for air sensation.

Coffee And Asthma

When you drink coffee during an asthma episode, the coffee aids in relaxing the muscles of your airways, helping to open them up so that the air flow returns to normal.

This does a world of good in relieving the symptoms of asthma. This secret effect lies in a small chemical that is present in those coffee beans; caffeine. Caffeine is the chemical cousin of theophylline, which is an asthma medicine used to treat severe attacks by dilating your airways.

When you drink a warm cup of coffee, it also helps break down that sticky phlegm stuck in your throat, making breathing easier. However, the rule is not to include any sugar, cream or milk as these really are of no help. Using cream, sugar, or milk would actually cause more problems by increasing the buildup of saliva in your throat, clogging those airways and making your breathing problem worse.

Research has found that coffee has proven these benefits, supporting its use in asthma patients. The study found that coffee alleviates asthma symptoms for up to four hours and does provide some immediate relief to the individual.

Is It Safe To Use?

Although coffee works temporarily, by no means is it a replacement for the actual prescribed medicine of the disease. Yes, it can increase the total comfort provided, but that is as far as it goes. Another precaution to keep in mind is that a person who is already taking theophylline will have to avoid the use of coffee all together as it could produce additional side effects which are not at all beneficial for your health.

The bottom line is that coffee has proven its role in helping to calm asthma, however, the coffee should only be used as an added aid to improve the daily well being of the person. The medicine schedule should be kept intact. Nevertheless, coffee leaves no doubt in mind about its powers in helping people with asthma.
