Coffee: Is It Really All It’s Cracked Up To Be?

Written by: Brandi Monasco

Over the past several years, I have heard contradicting things about coffee. One day they tell you it is bad for you, the next day they tell you that it is good for you. Nonetheless, I drink coffee every day. I love the aroma and the rich taste of it. It’s even better with honey and almond milk (rather than sugar)!

So, what’s the deal with coffee?

Here is some great news for you coffee lovers: according to the American Medical Association, they recommend that “moderate tea or coffee drinking likely has no negative effect on health, as long as you live an otherwise healthy lifestyle.”

Booyah! And, along with that, there are plenty of reasons why coffee is not bad for you!

Drinking Coffee Can Improve Your Energy Level. No surprise there! I always get a great boost of energy after I’ve had my cup of coffee in the morning. You get an energy boost from coffee because it contains a stimulant called caffeine.

When you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream and travels to your brain. When it enters your brain, the caffeine blocks a neurotransmitter that is called adenosine. This neurotransmitter promotes sleep and suppresses arousal (being awake). When the neurotransmitter is blocked, the activity of other neurotransmitters increases, which leads to increased energy.

Drinking Coffee Gives You More Antioxidants Than Anything Else! According to one study performed by the American Chemical Society, “Americans get more of their antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source. Nothing else comes close.”  The antioxidants in coffee can lower your risk of colon cancer, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and diabetes.

Drinking Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat. The caffeine in coffee is a stimulant which is found in a lot of fat burning supplements. Caffeine is actually one of the very few naturally occurring substances that aid in burning fat. The caffeine in just one cup of coffee is enough to give you a fat burning boost for the next two and a half hours. However, to fully reap these fat burning benefits, you will need to skip out on the sugar and the creamer and drink your coffee black.

Drinking Coffee Can Make You Happier. I know that it makes me happier and feel less grumpy in the mornings after I have had my first cup! A study performed by the National Institute of Health found that people who drink four or more cups of coffee per day are 10% LESS likely to be depressed. The reason behind coffee making you happier? The antioxidants!

Drinking Coffee Can Make You Smarter. Not only will you get a burst of energy from drinking coffee, but it can also make you smarter. When you drink coffee, your brain is allowed to work more efficiently. Having your brain working more efficiently means that your thoughts, reaction time, attention and even your logical reasoning will improve.

There you have it; coffee is GOOD for you!

Unfortunately, not all coffee is the same nor will all of them give you the same health benefits, so here are a few things to look for when you are deciding on which coffee to purchase:

1. Go organic.

2. Choose darker roasted beans. Darker roasted beans will produce a higher level of antioxidants.

3. To avoid the harmful additives, also get stocked up with almond milk and/or coconut oil to use as natural creamer and use honey as sweetener.

I started with Fitlife back in 2011-2012…I wrote into Fitlife asking for an extreme amount of help. I was 300 pounds, with high cholesterol, and Drew helped me transform my life. I lost over 130 pounds and I no longer have high cholesterol. Not only did I lose weight, so did my husband, who lost over 70 pounds!
