Chronic Fatigue Is In Your Gut, Not Your Head – Saturday Strategy

Fatigue is a normal result of a busy and/or vigorous lifestyle, but chronic fatigue is something different. Chronic fatigue is an issue that doesn’t go away after a good night’s rest. It is something that sits on top of you like a weighted blanket everywhere you go, and is usually accompanied by some of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of memory
  • Poor concentration
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Unexplained muscle pain
  • Severe morning fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Extreme exhaustion that doesn’t subside
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle twitching
  • Excessive sweating
  • Joint pain
  • Long term flu-like symptoms
  • IBS
  • Poor temperature regulation

Chronic fatigue is mostly seen in adults, but  is also occasionally seen in young children and adolescents.

Because in the past physicians have been unable to figure out a direct cause of chronic fatigue, many believed (and sadly many still do believe) that is is a psychological condition.

The Link Between Gut Health And Fatigue

An exciting new study published just LAST MONTH in Science Daily has found a link between your GUT BACTERIA and your chronic fatigue!

Turns out – it’s NOT ALL IN YOUR HEAD.

IT’S IN YOUR GUT!

Researchers of this new study were able to predict with 83% accuracy WHICH of their participants suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome through looking at the diversity of their gut bacteria using stool samples and blood work.

Less good gut bacteria = inflammation = fatigued, depressed patients.

Researchers found that inflammatory markers in the blood were very likely a result of a “leaky gut from intestinal problems that allow bacteria to enter the blood.”

Gluten was also found to be a big trigger of a leaky gut. Studies found that gluten stimulates a protein molecule called zonulin that actually triggers “leaks” in your gut’s lining.

The Link Between The Brain And The Gut

In a 2014 study, researchers found that those who suffer from chronic fatigue also had less white matter and more abnormalities in the right hemisphere of the brain when compared to healthy individuals.

So we know that the condition of your gut microbiome are likely at the root of your fatigue… now what?

Time to focus on healing your gut! Which, by the way, is home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms! 70-80% of your immune system and 90% of your serotonin!

There is a LOT you can do on your own when it comes to healing your gut and improving your chronic fatigue symptoms.

  • Get More Probiotics: I would highly recommend taking a high quality probiotic supplement daily. We make our very own! You can find it here. Also, eat more fermented/probiotic-rich foods. Sauerkraut, fermented veggies, miso, kefirs, homemade yogurt, kimchi, etc.
  • Avoid Gluten: The jury is out, there really isn’t anything about gluten that is good for you. Over the past several decades wheat has changed and now contains toxic levels of wheat germ agglutinin, which damages your kidneys and also damages your intestinal wall. You can enjoy many grains such as quinoa, wild rice and amaranth that are gluten-free and delicious.  
  • Increase Vegetable And Fruit Intake: It is quite surprising how many people are NOT eating hardly any fruits and veggies! These are the most healing foods on the planet and will give you loads of vitamins, minerals, micronutrients and fiber that keep your system running smoothly and help you feel the best you possibly can. Include these with every meal! A great way to get your daily fruits and veggies is through green juicing and green smoothies.

These steps are the beginning towards healing your gut and living a life free of chronic fatigue. The road may not be easy, but your health is worth it. Take every small step you can towards a better life that is full of energy and zest! Do not settle for less than your very best.

Ingredients

1 cup coconut water kefir

1 frozen banana

½ avocado

2 tbsp raw cacao

Raw cacao nibs (optional)
