Choose These Seed Milks Instead Of Cow Milk

Got milk? If you are like most of us, you grew up under the impression that milk (as in cow’s milk) is good for you. As a kid you probably sported the milk mustache and enjoyed your chocolate and strawberry milk along with regular white milk. Milk is good for your bones, so you drank an extra glass to please mom – and of course, because you liked it; after all, you’ve stayed away from the icky broccoli that mom tried to force you to have
Turns out mom was right about broccoli: it is extremely healthy for you. But mom was wrong about milk and so was everyone else. Milk is not necessary for humans and it is not exactly good for you either.
Milk And Dairy Products Raise A Lot Of Questions
Inflammation And Disease
Dairy products are acidic and promote inflammation. Non-organic milks are filled with hormones and pesticides, but even organic milks are not as pure and fresh as you’d want them to be. They are linked to many diseases, including cancer, heart disease and chronic pain.
Moreover, 15% of North Americans, 50% of Hispanics, 70% of Native Americans and Blacks and 90% of Asians are actually lactose intolerant, experiencing gas, bloating and other digestive issues when consuming milk and other dairy products. A growing number of people are sensitive or allergic to dairy in general, even if it is lactose-free. You can develop these sensitivities over-time.
What About Calcium?
You may be surprised, but milk is also not the best source of calcium, instead there are plenty of plant-based sources to meet your calcium needs, including broccoli, collards, kale, chickpea, beans, tofu and dried figs.
What About The Environment… And The Cows?
Consuming milk also raises concerns about animal rights and the environment, especially when you consider factory farming and its consequences to not only the quality of life of these cows, but our environment and health due to the use of pesticides, hormones and the release of methane and other waste.

Drinking plant-based milks is a much better idea. They are better for your health and better for our environment too. They are more versatile as well with so many flavors from almond milk to rice milk, from soy milk to coconut milk and so on. You can also make them yourself.

Sunflower Seed Milk
- 1 cup rawsunflower seeds
- 3 cups of water
- Optional: 2 tbsp of sweetener (honey, maple syrup or date syrup)
- Optional: 1 tsp vanilla
- A pinch of salt
- Soak the sunflower seeds with the salt in water for 8 hours or overnight.
- Strain and rinse after soaking.
- Put the seeds and 3 cups of water into your blender. Blend well for 2-3 minutes until finely ground and closer to a thicker milk texture.
- Run it through a nut milk bag, cheesecloth or strainer. You can use the leftover fiber in smoothies.
- Add your sweetener and/or vanilla if you want a sweeter taste.
- This milk keeps in your fridge for 3 days.
Pumpkin Seed Carrot Ginger Milk
- Soak the pumpkin seeds in water with the salt for about 8 hours or overnight then rinse and strain.
- Add everything to your blender. Blend well for 2-3 minutes.
- Strain through a nut milk bag, strainer or cheesecloth. You can use the remaining fiber in a smoothie or raw dish or compost it otherwise.
- You can keep the milk in your fridge for 3 days.
