Chia Seeds – For More Than Just Chia Pets!

Written by: Brandi Monasco

When someone says the word “chia,” I can’t help but to start singing the Chia Pet jingle. It’s just funny to me. Weird, right?

Even though many people associate chia seeds with the Chia Pet product, chia seeds can actually be eaten. And no, not right off of the Chia Pet!

Chia seeds are actually more than just something you place on a cute ceramic planter in the shape of a head or a little puppy to see a type of grass grow. Chia seeds are actually pretty delicious to eat and have numerous ways that they can benefit your body!

  • Chia Seeds Help With Digestion. They are full of fiber which helps keep your digestive system running smoothly. Chia seeds have a gel-like consistency when they become fully soaked in water, which can help support the growth of probiotics in your gut. Chia seeds are also more digestible than flax seeds.
  • Chia Seeds Fight Against Free Radical Damage. Chia seeds are full of phenols, which are a type of chemical that contains an antioxidant property. This antioxidant property helps to fight against damage that is caused by free radicals that you come into contact with on a daily basis. One study has shown that chia seeds are able to fight against a large amount free radical damage. And because they fight against free radical damage, they also help to keep your skin looking youthful.
  • Chia Seeds Contain Omega-3’s. Omega 3 is an essential mineral that your body needs in order to function properly, but sometimes it can be hard to ensure that you are getting enough of this essential mineral. Chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Chia Seeds Can Provide Energy. When you are feeling slow and sluggish, eating chia seeds can be a quick and healthy way to get an energy pep. They do not contain sugar, but are said to be just as effective as sport and energy drinks.

Chia seeds are easy to come by; you can usually find them in your supermarket or health food store. They are very versatile just as they are healthy. Here are a few ways to add chia seeds to your diet.

Chia Seed Pudding

Soak two tablespoons of chia seeds in milk overnight (almond, cashew, coconut, whichever non-dairy milk is your favorite). Dice up some mangos or berries, add pecans, maple syrup and a tiny bit of vanilla extract (to your taste preference) and enjoy.

Add Chia Seeds To Your Smoothies

Adding chia seeds in with your smoothies makes your smoothie even healthier. Simply add in one tablespoon per glass.

Drinking Chia Water Helps You Debloat

If you’re feeling bloated, add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds to a glass of water and drink. You can also add them into your coffee or tea.

Are you familiar with chia seeds? What’s your favorite way to use them? Share your thoughts and tips with us in the comments below!
