Chemical Found In Ayahuasca May Be Able To Completely Reverse Diabetes
By Kat Gal
I first heard about Ayahuasca when a friend of mine who was recovering from Lyme Disease at the time decided to go to Peru on an Ayahuasca retreat. I didn’t really understand what Ayahuasca was then. I just imagined her taking some simple healing herbs in a foreign environment.
Then I watched Sacred Science and became absolutely fascinated.
What Is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is more than just a simple herb – it’s an Amazonian plant mixture that induces an altered state of consciousness that lasts for about 4 to 8 hours. Ayahuasca is a sacred plant medicine, a shamanic herb that is used for its medicinal abilities and as a shamanic means of communication during a ceremonial Ayahuasca session.
Nobody knows how long the drink has been used. The first Western contact was recorded by Richard Spruce in 1851. Ayahuasca is becoming increasingly popular the more that is learned about it. More and more people are traveling to the Peruvian and Ecuadorian jungle to experience the medicine that is said to be able to “heal anything.”
Whether it can truly heal anything is still up to research, but studies show that there’s a particular chemical found in Ayahuasca that has the potential to actually reverse diabetes.
Worldwide Problem Of Diabetes
Diabetes affects hundreds of millions worldwide. Potential cures and methods to reverse diabetes are under research and among the remedies that are showing promising results, Ayahuasca is one of them.
Diabetes is a condition that prevents your pancreas from producing insulin, a hormone that enables you to receive energy from food. This occurs when your immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas called beta cells. The cause of diabetes is not fully understood and, according to modern science, there is no cure. Alternative medicine tends to think otherwise.
Results From Studies And Research
A new research has been published in the journal of Nature Medicine based on a study done by researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
“Using three different mouse and human islet in vivo–based models, we show that harmine is able to induce beta cell proliferation, increase islet mass and improve glycemic control. These observations suggest that harmine analogs may have unique therapeutic promise for human diabetes therapy,” explained members of the study.
First researchers found that harmine could reproduce beta cells in a culture. They injected human islets into diabetic mice and gave them harmine. This lead to beta cell production, which brought their blood glucose levels back to normal. Harmine also tripled the number of beta cells in the pancreas’ of the mice.
The study screened over 100,000 potential drugs and only harmine was able to drive human insulin-producing beta cells to multiply.
Though author Andrew Stewart, MD admits that there is a lot of work that still has to be done to improve the specificity and potency of the harmine and related compounds, he believes that this is a promising first step towards effective future treatment of diabetes.
What About Harmine-Containing Ayahuasca?
Beta cell regeneration is thought to be the answer and ultimate cure for diabetes. But there is a lot more research to be done. The next step of research is to develop drug candidates that would only target the beta cells.
However, one may wonder that if there’s a vital a chemical found in a natural plant such as Ayahuasca, why not just take the plant instead of testing this specific chemical and potentially producing more drugs?
Ayahuasca is currently illegal in the United States. To use it legally, you have to travel to Ayahuasca retreat centers in the Amazonian jungle. If you want scientific proof of its effects, you may be curious to see what further research brings.
There have also been some favorable developments at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) in diabetes research. Their researchers recently discovered how to make large quantities of insulin-producing cells.
They compare this breakthrough to the development of antibiotics, which (although successful) have not come without severe and damaging health consequences. As we speak, the stem cell-derived beta cells are undergoing clinical trials in animal models with the hope that clinical trials will begin as soon as possible.
All this is theory and research has yet to be done, but there has been evidence found that diet and lifestyle can help reverse diabetes.
Effects Of Diet And Lifestyle
The documentary, Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days, shows how raw food can help with diabetes.
It follows 6 subjects with diabetes (5 with type 2 and 1 with type 1) who were all taking insulin. During the experience, subjects basically changed their diets to an all-raw vegan diet prepared by Gabriel Cousens, a holistic physician, raw food leader and author.
One participant left the center early. All 4 of the remaining participants with type 2 Diabetes were able to stop medication and achieve normal levels of blood sugar. The person with Type 1 diabetes showed drastic improvements in his diabetic condition as well.
Dr. Neal Barnard has written a book on and created a program to reverse diabetes naturally through diet. Dr. Barnard’s program helps repair how the body uses insulin. He is a believer of low-fat plant-based lifestyles, is a vegan advocate and a founder of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
There have been cases of people with Type 1 Diabetes treating and helping themselves heal with raw food. Dr. Kirt Tyson had followed Dr. Cousens’ raw food plan, which prescribes a high-fat raw food diet high in juices, smoothies and simple salads. Tasha Lee had reversed her disease with a high-carb, low-fat, fruit-based raw vegan approach (yes, by eating sugary fruits).
What Rout To Take?
With disappointments of modern medicine, more and more people are taking alternative and natural routes with results equal to and sometimes even better than what’s available to them through mainstream options by doctors and government-appointed professionals.
If you have diabetes, you may have been told that only mainstream ideas and modern medicine have the answers you’re seeking. But now you are aware that food is POWERFUL and can transform your condition.
Diet and lifestyle matter. What you eat, what you think, what you feel and what you do ALL matter. It is important that you know that there are options to choose from, depending on what feels right to you.
Take charge of your life and your health with informed decisions and through loving, mending and powerful actions.
