Cayenne Salve To Use For Achy Joints

Cayenne is such a versatile little pepper that it has made its way all the way into both the food world and the remedy world.
Not only does cayenne pepper spice up your food, but it also has a warming effect within your body as well as topically when used as a salve, making it the perfect ingredient to use in this homemade achy muscle and joint cream.
Some people love cayenne so much that they refuse to go through winter time without its wonderful healing effects.
Cayenne As A Medicine
If you have ever had this wonderful pepper on your food, then you know for a fact that it is super HOT! In cooking, it is great for spicing up your dish and adding a splash of flavor. Along with that, it works its stimulating powers down in your digestive system and circulatory system as well.
Cayenne helps to stimulate salivation and digestive enzymes to aid in the processing of your food. Its natural boost of vitamin C supports the body while its main ingredient, capsaicin, will travel in your blood to the bain, encouraging it to release endorphins.
These hormones and internal effects can do their magic when you prepare your achy joints that are struggling with muscle pain, bursitis and arthritis a well-deserved, powerful healing salve.
This natural homemade healing cream is packed with vitamins C and A, both of which help to support the immune system while also easing topical pain.
Safety And Warnings
Cayenne really is hot, so please make sure you handle it with extreme care. There are parts of this plant that can burn sensitive skin. When making this salve or cooking with cayenne, use the correct dose or amount, which is usually not very much at all. Please refrain from touching your eyes or mouth; if you need to, wear gloves.
Preparing Your Medicinal Oil
Step 1: First off, you will want to prepare a medicinal oil, which is done by placing your herbs into a double boiler. Otherwise the oil could overheat and end up destroying both your herbs and oil.
Step 2: Cover the herbs with about an inch or two of high-quality cooking oil (preferably olive oil).
Step 3: Bring the oil to a very low simmer, with just a few bubbles rising up, ensuring that you do not get any rapid boiling. Simmer gently for about 30 minutes to an hour, always checking to make sure the oil isn’t overheating and deep frying your herbs.
Step 4: When your oil starts to smell a bit “herby,” it will then become green or even golden and smell strongly of herbs. That will be your signal to know that the oil has taken on the herbal properties of your ingredients. One last thing about the oil: the lower the heat and the longer you allow for infusion, the better the oil will be.
Step 5: Lastly you will need to strain out the herbs from your oil, using a large stainless-steel strainer and, if you need it, a cheesecloth to line your strainer. Discard your now spent herbs. Allow your oil some time to cool, then you are ready to bottle it up and label it for later use.
Now it’s time to make your cayenne salve!
This salve is excellent for soothing those achy joints and creaking bones. Again, you will need to make sure that while preparing this salve, you don’t touch your eyes or other “sensitive parts.” I would highly recommend gloves and washing your hands thoroughly after you touch the pepper.
Just to let you know how bad this stuff can be, during my military service, I got hit with pepper spray for training and it wasn’t comfy at all. Later when cooking with this stuff, I found that I would much rather have the pepper spray than the straight cayenne pepper.
Ingredients for your cayenne rub:
- ½ cup of olive or peanut oil
- 1 tbsp of cayenne powder or flakes
- ⅛ cup of beeswax
- Just a few drops of wintergreen essential oil
Just so you are aware, there are a few different tricks that go into making a high-quality salve, but the first batch you make can turn out exactly right if you follow these simple steps:
- Make use of your medicinal oil or herbal oil and add ¼ cup of beeswax. Heat both together over a very low heat, making sure to occasionally stir, until the wax is melted.
- Do a quick consistency test. Make sure to not skip this step; it is simple and only takes a few minutes. It will help to ensure that your salve is exactly the right thickness that you desire.
Take 1 tablespoon of the mixture and put in on a plant and place in the freezer for just a minute or two. Check the firmness of the salve. For a harder salve, add more beeswax to your blend and for softer version, just add more oil.
- Once your mixture is at the consistency that you want, remove the blend from the heat and pour it immediately into your containers. Do remember that you are working with very hot oil, so this part of the job isn’t suitable for your little ones.
To Use: When you are ready to apply your salve to your ailing body, simply take a fingerful or so and rub over the painful joints for the best results.
Storage: To store your slave, make sure to place it in a cool, dark place. If you do this, you will be able to keep if for several months, potentially even years. Just don’t keep it in your car as it will spoil rapidly and will not be pleasant to be around for anyone.
