Can You Teach Fat Cells To Burn Calories?
By Paula Scimone
Here’s a great shift in positive thinking on an old, sometimes depressing subject…
Burning calories and losing fat.
You work hard every day either by diet, exercise or supplementation to lose unwanted body fat – white fat, specifically. It can be frustrating, especially when you aren’t seeing results.
But here’s a way to put a positive spin on it!
Imagine being happy about gaining more fat – brown fat. When you’re happy, you automatically start kicking up those happy hormones (endorphins). So, next time you head out to exercise, search for a new recipe or think about turning up the heat, think about making more brown fat!
What is brown fat?
Brown fat is an energy-burning, heat-producing fat that eats up white fat cells (the bad guys). Brown fat is our friend!
Here’s some ways you can up the productivity of your brown fat and burn more calories:
1. Practice the 80/20 rule.
It’s just as important to eat enough as it is to not eat too much. When you eat too few calories, your white fat hangs on tight and doesn’t want to change to brown. Over eat and more white fat cells are formed and it keeps brown cells from doing their job of burning calories.
2. An apple a day keeps the fat away.
And don’t peel them either! The skin of the apple contains ursolic acid and it has been shown to boost brown fat cells.
3. Move your body.
We all know a little exercise can help your health in a plethora of ways. When you get some fitness in, you produce the enzyme irisin, which helps turn white fat cells brown.
4. Baby, it’s cold!
Research has shown that keeping temperatures between 63-70 helps you burn more calories and your body will actively convert white fat cells to brown.
5. Boost melatonin production.
The hormone melatonin regulates your sleep/wake cycle. Increase your production of melatonin the natural way by keeping your room dark at night and shutting off tv’s, computers and cell phones. Increase foods like almonds, tomatoes, cherries and spices like cardamom and coriander.
At the end of the day, keeping cool, practicing a good, healthy diet and exercising will help you get out with the old-white fat and in with the new-brown fat.
