“Are you SERIOUS?”

This is what my bewildered “friend” said as I promptly stopped my car at the side of the road and exclaimed that he must get out of the car and go pick up the small candy wrapper he just threw out the window.

WHY?

Because littering is for jerks! It’s totally irresponsible and 100% preventable.

The amount of trash and pollution that ends up on our beautiful earth’s surface is increasing at an alarming rate.

The use of plastic has increased 20-fold in the past half-century! Furthermore, it is anticipated that in the next 20 years, the production of plastic will double AGAIN… and nearly quadruple over the next 50 years.

YOWZA! So, what does this mean for you? Given these statistics, you could be swimming in an ocean of plastic if nothing is done to stop this plastic pollution.

Check out this 90 second video that details exactly what is happening:

As reported by CNN Money, nearly a 3rd of all plastic packaging “escapes collection systems.”

Where does it GO?

More than 8 million TONS of plastics end up in the oceans each year, which is extremely threatening, considering plastic pieces can survive for hundreds (yes, HUNDREDS) of  years.

Let’s take a closer look at the damage being done to your earth’s oceans…

  • 165 million tons of plastics are currently in the oceans.
  • 1 garbage truck’s worth of plastic is being dumped into the ocean EVERY minute!
  • Current ratio of 1:5, plastic to fish.

If this type of dumping continues, the oceans are on track to have MORE plastic than fish (by weight) by 2050.

Whatever other discarded plastic that isn’t being thrown in the ocean is likely ending up in a landfill. These two places are holding about 70% of our plastic. Only a dismal 5% of plastics are effectively recycled.

It’s not just a problem of pollution, plastics are a far cry from being economical. According to a report released by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation:

“After a short first-use cycle, 95% of plastic packaging material value, or $80 to $120 billion annually, is lost to the economy.”

HOW can YOU help improve this plastic pollution situation?

The report mentioned above explains that a “new plastics economy” could be the solution. This would include more recycling, compostable plastic packaging and reusable packaging.

YOU can do your part by recycling any plastic products and materials that you use and also reduce your consumption of plastics by switching to glass containers as well as using reusable shopping bags.
