Boost Your Thyroid Health With These Superfoods

I believe that we are all connected and that the answers come when we most need them. I say this because lately I have been coming across so much information about thyroid health that it has become impossible to ignore.

If you’re like me, then you have probably heard of the thyroid, but may not know what it is or what its function is.

What Is The Thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland that produces thyroid hormones, which control many activities in your body, like how fast you burn calories and how fast your heart beats. When your thyroid is unhealthy, it can cause it to make either too many or too few of these hormones.

Depending on how many or how few hormones your thyroid makes, you may often feel restless or tired, or you may lose or gain weight.

Like any other part of the body, when you have thyroid health issues, it is even more important to consume a diet rich in nutrient-dense foods to help regulate your immune system and balance your thyroid health.

The father of medicine proposed that all disease begins in the gut, so gut health and thyroid health go hand in hand. Moreover, when you increase the amount of nutrient-dense foods in your diet and restore depleted nutrients, you give your body the chance to heal from the inside out.

That being said, I want to share my 8 favorite superfoods that do wonders for not only thyroid health, but also your overall health.

8 Foods To Boost Thyroid Health

1. Coconut Oil – Hit the ground running, its popularity gained momentum and suddenly it was everyone’s secret to great hair, nails, skin, gut health and even sex. Its popularity aside, this oil is a rock star when it comes to using it as a natural remedy. Coconut oil contains two important acids, caprylic and lauric, which help balance your metabolism, fight fatigue and provide powerful immune-boosting properties.

Tip: Try adding a tablespoon or two of coconut oil to your morning smoothies for an extended energy boost while also supporting your metabolism and keeping your immune system in tiptop shape.

2. Wild-Caught Salmon – The fastest way to my heart is with wild-caught salmon! This is because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (making it an anti-inflammatory champion) and is dense with vitamin D.

Tip: Be sure to go for wild-caught salmon instead of farm-raised to avoid adding toxins and chemicals to your diet and to gain the most nutritional value.

3. Bone Broth – I previously wrote about bone broth because it has the ability to help support the gut. Bone broth naturally helps the gut lining, which makes it excellent for leaky gut! Bone broth is also packed full of amino acids and collagen, making it both a thyroid and digestive health superstar.

Tip: You can drink it plain, like a savory tea (my favorite way to drink it) and even use it as a base for soups, rice and pastas.

4. Fermented Foods – When I began my transformation, I really got into fermented foods, I found that they really helped support a healthy gastrointestinal tract, because they are packed with healthy probiotics to help support the healthy bacteria in the gut. I enjoyed and still enjoy kimchi and kombucha.  

Tip: Add sauerkraut or kimchi to your meals as a side, or drink kombucha to hydrate!

5. Seaweed – So many people suffer from an iodine deficiency. Seaweed, has natural iodine content. Iodine is important for keeping your thyroid healthy as well. It is important to keep in mind however, that if you suffer from a selenium deficiency, iodine can actually cause more inflammation.

Tip: To prevent this, try adding a couple of Brazil nuts to your diet to help balance both selenium and iodine.

6. Green Plantains – So, full disclosure, I am not a big fan of plantains, but they are great for promoting optimal gut health. So I eat them from time to time. They are a rich source of resistant starch, which means they help to feed all of those good and healthy bacteria in the gut.

Tip: Eat green plantains, sliced into discs and pan-fried in a bit of coconut oil, with a sprinkle of cinnamon and salt at the end. YUM!

7. Brazil Nuts – These nuts are amazing for thyroid health, because they are dense with selenium; you only need about two per day to reach your selenium requirements! Selenium is super important when it comes to thyroid health, because it helps support thyroid hormone metabolism. This mineral also helps decrease anti-thyroid antibodies and helps improve the physical structure of the thyroid itself.

Tips: Add just a couple of Brazil nuts to your diet per day and your thyroid will thank you.

8. Turmeric – I saved my most favorite remedy for last! Turmeric and I have a very long love affair because this root has never let me down. It is an all-around tremendous health-promoting superfood. It should come as no surprise that it made my list, this is because it is great at reducing inflammation and can even help give your body a detoxifying boost. Turmeric has also been found to inhibit thyroid cancer cells.

Tip: Toss it in stir-fries, or sprinkle a bit in your smoothie in the morning. My favorite way to take it is in golden milk.
