Boost Your Gut Health With This Unique Salsa Recipe

Some people say that life is all about balance.

I’m all about a “balanced life”  –  until there is a bowl of chips and salsa in front of me.

My salsa-to-chip ratio is off the charts. I pile so much salsa on one chip, that I would definitely win the gold medal if this activity were an Olympic sport.

Mmmmm. Salsa.

Every Olympian needs the BEST of the best food to fuel his or her body. Therefore, it’s time to call in the big guns and whip up some fermented salsa!

What Are Fermented Foods?

  • Fermentation preserves the nutrients in food and breaks down the food to a more digestible form.
    • The fermentation process creates a pre-digested state that allows the nutrients to be more bioavailable to your body. 

Why Eat Fermented Foods?

Your body is full of TRILLIONS of beneficial bacteria that directly affect your health and well being.

These bacteria outnumber your human cells 10 to 1 – Holy moly!

They live in what is called your “microbiome” and love to feast on their favorite foods. Every time you eat something, it has an impact on the environment in your gut. If you feed the bacteria what they love, they will reward you with great health.

And your gut bacteria LOVE fermented foods!

Fermented foods contain an abundance of probiotics that:

    • Help improve digestion
    • Introduce beneficial bacteria into your digestive system and help the balance of bacteria in your digestive system
    • Have been shown to help slow or reverse some diseases, improve bowel health, aid digestion and enhance immunity 

How To Make Fermented Salsa


  • 4 large tomatoes, diced
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cups packed cilantro leaves, chopped
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tsp Celtic sea salt
  • 2 Mason Jars with lids 

Note: Add or subtract ingredients to your desired taste. Just do NOT leave out the salt – it is needed for the fermentation process.


1. In a large bowl, toss all ingredients until they are mixed together.

      • Scoop the salsa mixture into the mason jars.
      • Press down the salsa until it is completely covered in the juices.
      • Loosely screw the lid on the jar. 

2. Place the salsa in a cool and dark spot in the pantry.

    • Let set for 48 hours.
    • You will start to see bubbles, which indicates the salsa has fermented. 

Storage: Keep in the refrigerator and use within 4-5 days.
