When in Italy, you eat pizza, pasta, cannolis… and, well, everything.

In Spain… it’s time for tapas!

When it comes to the United Kingdom, you can’t leave without having a proper “fry up.”

How do I know? Because I traveled to all three of these countries last year and ate. A LOT.

WHAT is a fry up? It is a hearty breakfast consisting of eggs, beans, tomatoes, bacon or sausage, fried bread, potatoes, mushroom and black pudding.

While it may have SOME slight nutritional benefits, ‘fry ups’ don’t have the reputation for being a “healthy” way to start your day. Delicious? ABSOLUTELY! Gut-busting? Unfortunately yes.

HOWEVER, a shining star of the fry up has stepped forward to reveal itself as a new type of ‘superfood’  – black pudding.

What Is Black Pudding?

  • Also know as blood sausage.
  • A pudding made of curdled and boiled pig’s blood, mixed with chunks of pork fat and spices, then stuffed into a sausage casing.

Why Is Black Pudding Being Considered A New ‘Superfood?’

  • Loaded with protein, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
  • Practically carb-free.
  • Rich in iron and zinc.
    • Iron is needed to make healthy blood cells.
    • Iron also helps prevent anemia.

It’s been a breakfast staple for years throughout the UK, but more recently it has started receiving recognition for its health benefits, creating a new food trend of sorts.

According to Lorna Maclennan, director of Stornoway’s Charles Macleod Butchers’ Shop in the UK, “we have had a surge in the number of people ordering their black puddings direct. January is usually quiet, but we have had 100 orders with more coming in all the time.”

How To Eat Black Pudding

Okay, so I know what you are thinking – PIG’S BLOOD? NO freaking way! I thought the same at first, until I was convinced to at least take a taste. Afterall, I was sitting in a family’s home in the English countryside and the mom had prepared this amazing fry up.

The verdict?

It’s preeeeetty tasty – I was shocked! However, quality does matter, because I went on to try another black pudding and it didn’t have the same consistency and taste.

Here is how you can add black pudding to your diet (minus the ‘fry up’):

1. Cook it in a pan and serve it the fresh organic eggs and fruit.

2. Add it to your salad.

3. Use it to make meatballs and add it to your favorite pasta or zoodle dish.

4. Add it to your favorite sandwich

Will you give black pudding a try?
