Beauty Uses For Coconut Oil
Written by: Brandi Monasco
When I first heard of putting coconut oil on my face, I admit I cringed. Why on earth would I put OIL on my skin when I already have to deal with oiliness and breakouts?
Unbeknownst to me, coconut oil is actually GREAT for your skin. Coconut oil is LOADED with good fats and nutrients that provide energy and incredible benefits for you body, both internally and externally! You can even use it as a replacement for common beauty products!
Here are a few ways you can use coconut oil as a beauty product to help get you started:
Makeup Remover: Instead of using harsh chemicals to remove your makeup, use a little bit of coconut oil to remove your makeup as well as your eyeshadow and mascara. You will notice that there is no rubbing or tugging when you try to remove your eye makeup.
“Coconut oil solubilized or breaks up water-resistant substances used in eye shadow and mascara, releasing them from the skin and lashes,” says cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta.
Body Butter: Coconut oil works at keeping your skin moisturized and prevents moisture lost. It contains saturated fats that are medium chain fatty acids. This type of fat keeps skin moisturized and smooth to the touch. These fats also prevent moisture loss through the pores in your skin.
Why use added fragrances and chemicals on your skin when you can make your own body butter?
- 1 cup coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (this is optional)
- A few drops of your favorite essential oils
You will also need a mixer (or be very efficient using a hand held wire whisk)
1. Add all ingredients to a bowl. Do not melt the coconut oil first as it will not whip.
2. Mix on a high speed for 6 to 7 minutes or until the coconut oil is whipped into an airy, light consistency.
3. Spoon your newly whipped body butter into a glass jar and cover tightly. Store the jar at room temperature (if your house stays warm, you may want to store it in the fridge so melting will not occur.)
Body Oil: If your skin feels a little dry and dehydrated, rub a bit of coconut oil in your hands to warm it up and then rub it on spots such as your knees and elbows that need a little moisturizing. You can also use on cracked hands and feet or wherever you want your skin to feel soft.
Body Scrub: Mixing coconut oil with sugar not only moisturizes your skin, but it is also a great natural body scrub. Just mix coconut oil with sugar and scrub your body with the mixture a few times a week.
Detox Bath: Taking a detox bath is a good way to remove toxins from your body while you are allowing your body and mind to relax and unwind. Try this recipe out:
- ¼ coconut oil
- ¼ Epsom salt
Directions: Simply mix together and put into a hot bath. If you would prefer, you can also include a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
Face Wash: Coconut oil is a natural antimicrobial and with its moisturizing properties, makes a great face wash. Simply mix 1 cup of melted coconut oil with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. You can also add essential oils such as tea tree oil if you are prone to acne breakouts.
Lip Balm: You can also make lip balm with coconut oil. You will not only get the moisturizing effects to help those dry cracked lips, but you will also be free from using toxins or chemicals on your lips!
Those are some pretty amazing benefits of using coconut oil for beauty uses! Coconut oil is so versatile; you can eat it, add it in smoothies, use it in your hair and even on your face and teeth!
