Avoid This Commonly Overlooked Issue At Your Next BBQ

Between sports season and holidays, there are more than enough reasons for you and your family to enjoy the awesome tradition of barbeques. As you become more health conscious though, you start to notice that there are a lot of unhealthy habits that have been developed around our much-loved celebrations.  

There is NO reason  why you should give up eating healthy just because the time of year has changed. It is quite common to notice the more obvious areas of an unhealthy celebration such as the carbs and the meat, but there is another area that you may be overlooking…

Condiments & Salad Dressings

The sauces, dressings and condiments of the typical American diet are full of cheap oils, sugar and fats. Trying to keep your blood sugar balanced is nearly impossible with many of these highly processed “foods.”  

About ¼ of all servings of ketchup is pure sugar or the much more harmful – high fructose corn syrup. 2-tablespoons of BBQ sauce will give you 3 teaspoons or more of sugar!

Just because you are eating a salad doesn’t mean that it is healthy. Typical commercial salad dressings have many different types of sugar, including high-fructose corn syrup. They also often contain cheap canola and soybean oils, which are often grown from GMOs. These dressings also contain harmful oils that have an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause inflammation in the body.

Condiment Tips And Alternatives

1. If you do use condiments, go very sparingly.

2. Buy or make vegan mayo, organic sugar-free ketchup or mustard.

3. Make your own dry BBQ rubs with healthier spices – This way you can control the ingredients and reduce the harmful effects. Look up recipes using turmeric, paprika, organic bbq spice mixes, cilantro or basil.  

4. Use Hummus – Make or buy a good hummus and use that as a spread to flavor your food.

Salad Dressing Tips And Alternatives

1. Read Labels – If you see any of the following ingredients, do not purchase it: sugar, sweeteners, malt syrup, high fructose corn syrup, maltose, dextrose, fructose, corn syrup and fruit juice concentrates.

2. Use extra virgin olive oil & a pinch of salt instead of a salad dressing.  

3. Try freshly squeezed lemon juice as a salad dressing.

Awareness is key to eating healthy and reducing your consumption of harmful chemicals. Slow down and pay closer attention to what goes into your food and, whenever possible, choose quality over quantity.
