Are You So Disconnected From Nature That It’s Making You Sick (Literally)?

Historically – and by indigenous and traditional societies today – health, happiness, healing and life have been viewed from a holistic angle. Somewhere along the lines, however, modern society has taken a wrong turn and begun viewing issues in these areas as separate entities.

We have not only begun viewing parts of our lives and beings as separate entities, but have also begun looking for quick fixes and easy reasons lying on the surface; for instance…

  • Heart problems are related to issues with the heart and need to be fixed through medication and surgery of the heart.
  • Headaches are due to reasons related to your head and need to be treated as such.
  • Depression is simply a chemical imbalance so you need a pill to help it and potentially some coping techniques to manage your symptoms.
  • Eating disorders are about food and control, nothing else.

In other words, in the collaborative mind of society, health issues are not connected, but are separate from each other, our core being and our world.

Based on my personal experience working as a coach, educator and researcher, I have to say that this is NOT true. Both physical and emotional issues are much deeper than that: they are more about suppressed identity, lack of self-love and acceptance and other deeply rooted emotional issues.

Throughout my life, I have dealt and am still dealing with an array of physical and emotional health issues, including chronic headaches, chronic hip pain, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, trauma from physical and emotional abuse, depression, anxiety and eating disorders. As a holistic health and life coach, I have also helped many women and men with similar chronic physical and emotional pains.

It has become clear that we must look at issues from a holistic angle, as interconnected pieces. I have also discovered that our suffering is greatly connected to our disconnect from our true identity and the universe we are part of.

The answer is not on the surface – it is not about the food, not about the weight, not about your salary, not about your job, not to your significant other who forgot Valentine’s Day, not about your parents’ divorce, not about {insert your explanation of your ailments}. Those are things simply lingering on the surface. But the real stuff is beneath that. The real stuff is much more complex.

I believe that emotional and physical issues all have deeply rooted emotional causes: lack of self-love, lack of self-acceptance, lack of stability, lack of control, lack of certainty, lack of confidence; being and feeling disconnected from your true identity, not living in alignment with your purpose, living out of fear rather than love.

But why is this? Why are so many people living out of fear, disconnected from their true identity?

We are living in complete DISCONNECT from the world.

We are the only beings on this planet that are utterly confused and are living in chronic misery caused by our way of life. Sure, animals get sick and are confused living in this unnatural environment humans created – but it is not their fault, but ours.

Humans are the only beings who have decided to step away from the natural, turning to more conventional, artificial ways of existing and are now suffering from the consequences, experiencing major disconnect resulting in chronic problems.

Have you seen a frog having a fat day? Do bunnies get confused about what kind of food they should eat? Do lionesses have to check with a magazine to know how to please their king? Do birds struggle to pay rent?

Yes, yes, humans are far more intelligent than animals. But think about monkeys, elephants or dolphins. They are incredibly smart animals. But do they worry about having a thigh gap, oversleeping in the morning and needing a cup of Joe for energy, wanting to quit their job, being confused about parenting or being so depressed that they just want to sit in the corner all day long?

Nope. They simply know what to do: it is natural. They are not fighting against their biological being – in a sense, they are living their purpose in the world.

On the other hand, us humans worry about everything: what to wear, what to eat and what to do. We worry about being good enough and pleasing others and quietly go crazy in the process.

What to eat is not so difficult. If it doesn’t have a label, if it comes from the ground, it is likely good for you. Processed stuff with a label on – even if it says “All Natural” – is likely unhealthy and unnatural. Stuff in nature does not come in a box.

Yet, we are confused. Addictions, pressure from the media, habits, our culture and our emotional pain leads us to eat chemically-infused, unnatural ‘foods.’ We hide behind layers of makeup and trendy clothes and build up walls around us because the house with two cars and a garage is what we are supposed to have. We say what our teachers told us to say and do what our boss expects of us. We secretly still try to please mom and dad. We try to fit in.

In short, we put on layers of masks: we have no idea what our true personality anymore.

We are supposed to be part of nature. Yet, nature became something we either love or hate. We go out for a hike or sit in a park in our free time. We observe it like it is something remote from us as though it were a movie screen. We buy our pets just like we pay rent for the land we sleep on, for the water we drink and even for the air we breathe in.

Isn’t this insane?

We are part of the universe just like the air, the water, the land, the plants and all the other animals. We are part of the beautiful cycle. We are designed to know what to do and how to live. We are designed to know it, to feel it, to believe it and to be a part of it – without questions, just simply, deeply being.

And yet, our society leaves us with no clue.

We have created an artificial world and have removed ourselves from nature.

We have disconnected ourselves not only from the universe, but from our true beings as well.

Being disconnected from our truth and identity, we experience self-esteem issues, lack of self-love, lack of stability, lack of control, doubt, shame and confusion, resulting in all sorts of emotional and physical issues.

Maybe food is part of it. Maybe your job, your family, your salary, your government and so on are parts of it.

But in the end, the true issue is disconnect – disconnect from ourselves and from the rest of the universe.

I believe that as you take your baby-steps to reconnect with your true being and the universe, slowly but surely, you also heal from your emotional and physical pains.

I believe that by reconnecting, you can achieve happiness, health and freedom.

Here are 3 ways to connect more deeply with yourself and the universe:

1. Surround Yourself With Nature

As human beings, we are not meant to live in boxes, yet even those who live in rural areas live in houses and use technology and other advancements.

Our modern life disconnects us from our natural surroundings. The good news is that you don’t have to go back to the cavemen days to find your way back to nature. Even if you are living in a crowded city, there are options for you.

Escape for a day, weekend, or even a week to nature. Visit some lakes, forests, beaches, or mountains. Camp out, go for hikes and stargaze. Make sure you take some time in nature every day, even when you are busy.

Take a short walk in a park. Run on trails. Lay down in the grass. Do some earthing (walking or standing barefoot on the ground). Do some gardening – a little box of herbs on your balcony can count as a garden, but better yet, create a bigger garden or join a community gardening project. Put some flowers and other plants around your house and office.

2. Practice Stillness

It is human nature and a conditioned habit that your brain is always chattering. However, constant chatter in your brain leads to compulsive thinking, nervousness, anxiety and lack of balance, rather than balance, peace and calm.

A daily 5-15 minute meditation practice can allow you to center your attention. You can use guided meditations, mantras, body scanning, or other forms of meditations. Observe your thoughts, but don’t think about them, imagine them as raindrops and let them go. A meditation practice will allow you to feel balance the rest of the day.

Throughout your day, make sure to stop and take a few deep breaths several times to calm and center yourself. Practice mindfulness as you go about your day. Keep a journal to let your racing thoughts leave you on a piece of paper.

3. Create Relationships

As a human being, you are part of the universe; therefore, human relationships are absolutely necessary. Finding positive and uplifting relationships can energize you. Your positive energy can energize others and in return, can spread the positive energy to you and others.

All the positive energy will circulate and ripple around the world. Creating positive and loving relationships can provide you the love and support you need to grow and to be yourself and can help you to provide the same loving space for others.

In our busy modern life, finding positive relationships can seem like a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Go online and check your local community boards to look for local activities, sisterhoods, brotherhoods, women’s circles, meet-ups, yoga classes, healing workshops, potlucks and more. Create your own circle by putting the word out there.

If you are living in a completely rural area or otherwise find it difficult to get out there in person, there are many online groups out there related to healing, self-love, happiness and self-development (and all kinds of other topics) where you can connect with others.

With the help of technology, you can create intimate connections, even when physically apart. When you create an intimate loving connection with another person you are ultimately creating an intimate connection with the universal energy. You will never feel alone again.
