Are You Properly Hyrdrating Yourself? Take Drinking Water To The Next Level

Hydration is important. You knew that, right? You should be drinking at least 8-10 8 oz glasses of water a day. But can you drink water wrong?

It’s not that there is a wrong way to drink water, but you can most certainly take it to the next level for maximum hydration and benefits if you follow these Ayurvedic principles.

1. Sip Your Water

Sip your water instead of chug it. If you drink it fast all at once, it will simply cause a quick flush through your system, leading to dehydration again. Yes, you can be dehydrated even if you chug 8 glasses down a day. Extra fluid will end up in your bladder instead of throughout your body where you need it. It is better to drink continuously throughout the day and keep your cells hydrated at all times.

2. Drink Lukewarm Water

While in many countries, drinking lukewarm water is the norm, many Westerners enjoy refrigerated water and Americans tend to love their ice. You would be surprised to learn that according to Ayurveda, cold water actually promotes toxin build-up from poor digestion by extinguishing your digestive fire. Cold water causes distress to your tissues and blood vessels. On the other hand, luke warm water can improve your digestion and circulation.

3. Drink Water In The Morning

Ideally you spend at least 8 hours sleeping, but even in a less than ideal situation, your body goes for 5-7 hours without water when you sleep. Drinking 16 oz of warm water on an empty stomach when you wake up can jumpstart your metabolism, help release toxins, rehydrate your body, give you energy and aid your digestion. Add some lemon for extra benefits to alkalize your body and keep your digestion healthy.

4. Don’t Drink Water During Meals

This is a big one, after all the first thing your waiter asks is what drink you would like to start with and may even give you a cold, icy glass of water to welcome you. Ideally, when you are eating, you should be focusing on your food. You should be chewing thoroughly and allow your saliva to start your digestive process.

If you drink water, digestive enzymes get diluted, which makes the digestive process more difficult for your body. Try to avoid drinking water – or anything else – 30 minutes before and after meals. If you are drinking throughout the day, you won’t even miss it.

5. Add Salt To Your water

Crazy idea, but you can benefit from some salt in your water. If you are drinking lots of water, it doesn’t mean it is making it to your cells. If you are making too many frequent trips to the potty, it is likely that your body is not absorbing much. A tiny pinch of Pink Himalayan salt in every glass of water can aid this process and keep you hydrated through plenty of minerals and electrolytes.

6. Listen To Your Body

It is nice to read all these tips about how you need 8-10 glasses of water, but in the end, your body knows what’s best. Listen to your body’s thirst cues and honor them by drinking water throughout the day. If you are listening to your body, it is impossible to ‘forget to drink’ or to get dehydrated. Keep a bottle of water on hand at all times to aid this process.

If you follow these pieces of advice, you will become a pro at drinking water and proper hydration. Let’s drink to that (water, of course)!
