Are You Drinking Your Matcha Green Tea?

Why YOU Should Drink Matcha Green Tea
Matcha Green Tea is one of the most nutritious tea powders known in the world of health and nutrition. The tea originated as a Japanese cultural tradition and has made its superior stand in the ranks of superfood. Made from Camellia sinensis plants, the amazing benefits of matcha green tea make the tea a true gift from Mother Earth.
Never tried it before? Or maybe you do drink it but you’re not aware of all the incredible benefits you’re providing your body! Check out all the goodies included in this tasty tea and give it a try if you haven’t already!
Leads To Alert Relaxation
Matcha green tea is probably best known for its calming nature. It has the natural ability to help you relax and feel at peace while still remaining alert. This quality makes the tea a great asset for those who practice meditation or yoga or have a lot to do and are working to avoid stress!
In various studies that are described by Russ Mason, M.S. in his article “200 mg of Zen: L-Theanine Boosts Alpha Waves, Promotes Alert Relaxation,” it’s the L-theanine factor in green tea that allows the alert relaxation effect:
“This relaxing effect is caused by the presence of a neurologically active amino acid, L-theanine, found almost exclusively in tea plants. Research with human volunteers has affirmed that L-theanine not only creates a sense of relaxation approximately 30–40 minutes after oral ingestion, but that it accomplishes this via two different avenues of approach.
First, this amino acid stimulates production of alpha brain waves directly, creating a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness such as is often achieved via meditation. Second, L-theanine appears to have a role in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA blocks release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin and may, therefore, have the key role in the relaxation effect.”
Increases Energy And Endurance
Though this aspect may seem counterproductive of the tea’s relaxation effect, in reality, it is an extended benefit of it. Matcha green tea has a unique combination of nutrients that, along with its natural caffeine content, create a clean, almost soothing energy boost that’s fit for a warrior (or a Samurai in Japanese culture). Because of the L-theanine and the alert relaxation it brings, this boost of attentive energy has no side effects of hypertension, anxiety, or nervousness.
Russ Mason, M.S. goes on in his article mentioned above to describe just what it is that makes matcha green tea able to give you an energy boost without any anxious or jittery side effects often developed from any other caffeinated beverages:
“Tea has earned a popular reputation for having less caffeine than coffee because the L-theanine in the tea actually lessens the stimulant effect of caffeine on the human nervous system. As a result, tea— especially green tea—has gained in popularity as a beverage that has a calming, or relaxing effect.
Japanese scientists were fairly certain that it was the amino acid L-theanine that created this relaxation effect, but had no research to support their hypotheses. Once Taiyo Kagaku had developed and standardized a process for producing L-theanine, it was possible for researchers to begin basic research with human volunteers.”
The research and studies conducted by those researchers went on to conclude that the Japanese’ original theory was, in fact, correct. Because of the relaxation aspect of L-theanine and how it combines with the natural caffeine in the tea, you are able to get a lasting energy boost without a crash, but also maintain the calm, alert, relaxed state described above.
Contains Catechins (CGCg)
Catechins are some of the strongest, most potent antioxidants that we know of. 60% of the catechins in matcha green tea are made up of one specific catechin known as epigallocatechin gallate, or CGCg. This particular catechin bears a significant amount of the benefits provided by catechins in general.
One aspect of the catechins (specifically CGCg) that has been vigorously studied by many scientists and researchers is its contribution to cancer prevention. One study done by the University of Kansas Cancer and Medical Center went deeper into CGCg and just what it is about the catechin that makes is so responsive in cancer prevention:
“An expanding body of preclinical evidence suggests EGCG, the major catechin found in green tea (Camellia sinensis), has the potential to impact a variety of human diseases. Apparently, EGCG functions as a powerful antioxidant, preventing oxidative damage in healthy cells, but also as an antiangiogenic and antitumor agent and as a modulator of tumor cell response to chemotherapy. Much of the cancer chemopreventive properties of green tea are mediated by EGCG that induces apoptosis and promotes cell growth arrest by altering the expression of cell cycle regulatory proteins, activating killer caspases, and suppressing oncogenic transcription factors and pluripotency maintain factors.”
Along with having strong potential for cancer prevention, EGCg also can provide benefits for maintaining heart health, brain health and weight loss. EGCg gives matcha green tea a real kick that you won’t find in any other beverage.
Detoxifies The Body
One essential part of making matcha green tea is the condition in which the plant (Camellia sinensis) is grown. Before the leaves of the plant are even harvested, the entirety of the plant is kept in the shade, out of the reach of the sun. Doing this causes a significant increase in the making of chlorophyll. As a result, the high levels of chlorophyll found in the harvested and brewed tea make the tea effective in clearing out heavy metals and other toxins from the body, advancing the detoxification process.
In an article published on the Global Healing Center (GHC), the author describes a study in more simpler terms that was done with chlorophyll and its powerful cleansing properties. The study was performed by researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University:
“Chlorophyll binds with toxic metals to hamper absorption and research has shown it can do the same with some carcinogens. A crossover study with 4 human volunteers tested chlorophyll’s ability to remove ingested aflatoxin, a known carcinogen. Each volunteer received three servings of the aflatoxin, followed with a meal, the latter two included a tablet of chlorophyll. The results showed rapid elimination with 95% evacuated within 24 hours.”
The catechins in matcha green tea have antibiotic qualities that help with maintaining the overall health of the body. In general, it’s the array of nutrients and vitamins that give the tea this health coverage, particularly for the immune system. Matcha green tea provides vitamins A and C, protein, calcium, iron and potassium, just to name a few of the essentials.
On Livestrong.com, an article published by Derek Bryan describes in and references in simple terms a study that goes into the immune system and the role that the nutrients and antioxidants in green tea play:
“…the antioxidants in green tea are beneficial in generally strengthening the immune system. By protecting it against damage from compounds known as free radicals and similar compounds in the body, green tea keeps the immune system running normally. Healthy immune systems are better at handling infections from bacteria, parasites and viruses.”
Along with the cleansing, energizing, strengthening benefits mentioned above, matcha green tea also can benefit people in regards to weight loss, cholesterol maintenance, memory and concentration improvement, heart health, skin care and so much more. If you’re not in the habit of drinking this incredible beverage yet, it is strongly encouraged. It’s a decision that very few regret.
