Are You Considering Going Paleo?

You’ve probably heard your friend saying that she’s going on the paleo diet, but what does that mean? What exactly is the paleo diet?

The paleo diet is a low sugar, high protein and low sodium diet that is meant to provide optimum health by following in our ancestors footsteps who lived in the paleolithic age. Pastured, free-range chicken, grass-fed beef and anything organic are the most preferred foods for a paleo dieter.

When it comes to proteins, seafood/fish, poultry, lean meats and wild game are favored because they contain less saturated fats, unlike processed meats.

When it comes to nuts of seeds, the varieties with the most concentration of omega-3’s like walnuts, macadamia, almonds and cashews are the best. Fruits with low glycerin index like tomatoes, melons, onions and broccoli are favored. Herbs and spices are recommended regardless of whether or not they have been processed since they are typically organic anyways.

In more basic terms, the paleo diet encourages the consumption of fruits, herbs, raw meats, fruits, nuts, seeds, eggs and healthy fats.

Where It Comes From

The paleo diet takes a different approach to healthy eating. Rather than focusing on which food groups should be avoided or indulged in, this plan goes back in time to mimic what early man naturally consumed. The diet is based on the foods consumed by the hunters and gatherers of the of the paleolithic era (stone age). This is how the diet got its shortened name, paleo diet.

Many people also refer to it as the hunter and gatherer diet. During the stone age, men would go out and hunt wild animals and catch fish for protein. Women and children would go out to gather fresh fruits, berries, nuts, grasses, leaves and vegetables. They were known as the hunters and gatherers.

Whatever you choose to call it, it’s essentially a diet that takes you back to our roots as humans. It brings you back to the more natural, original ways of eating.

Impact Of The Paleo Diet

Today, a lot of people are overweight, have high cholesterol levels, are stressed, suffering from depression, feelings of listlessness and are dying from diseases that can actually be prevented. Several reasons behind these situations depend on the quality and quantity of the food that is eaten. Your immune system does its best to protect you, but without proper diet, it can only go so far.

The paleo diet helps with the avoidance of different diseases and chronic illnesses of our time. It helps with the prevention of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, intestinal problems, autoimmune diseases and depression. It also acts as an acne treatment for people with skin issues.

Benefits Of The Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is used to promote health and help with many diet related diseases. It is also used for weight loss (and has proven to work very effectively). If you are seriously considering losing weight, you need to eat more lean proteins and fruits/vegetables and cut down on fats, sugars and extra carbs. The paleo diet is an excellent way to help you take this approach.

The paleo diet has more specifically been used successfully to help with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), insulin resistance, congestive heart failure, epilepsy, type 2 diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acne, allergies, menopause, inflammation, asthma, joint pains, arthritis, carbohydrate cravings, binge eating, food addictions, mood disorders and other health conditions.

In the end, it is all about feeling great and making the choices that sustain that feeling of well-being and also whether or not you have the willpower to make better choices when it comes to what you put in your mouth. What do you have to lose besides some unwanted weight?
